Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., New Orleans Alumnae Chapter Organizes "Get Out To Vote/Step to the Polls/SOULS to the Polls" to Mobilize First Time Voters for the November Election
NEW ORLEANS - "GET OUT TO VOTE/STEP TO THE POLLS/SOULS TO THE POLLS” is the mantra for the Sorority’s State and Local Social Action Committees who began work immediately after its 54th National Convention, to register 1st time voters, and assist to get them to the polls. “Our goal was to register 1000 voters, and as of October 16th, we registered 1,186 first time voters”, proudly stated by Janice Jenkins, NOA Social Action Chairperson.

One of the highlights of our “GET OUT TO VOTE/STEP TO THE POLLS/SOULS TO THE POLLS” initiative was registering high school students who are 18 years of age. The NOA Social Action Committee will reimburse participating schools in Orleans Parish for their field trip transportation to City Hall to vote for the first time in the November Election. The students will cast their ballots from November 5-7th. We are pleased to announce, on November 5th at 9am, in Room 8E10; the Chapter’s Social Action Committee will host a Voter Education Forum for the students who will vote. The speakers include Danielle Duplessis-Hammond and Jama’L Harrison from the Registrar of Voters Office. Janea Jamison, Program Manager with Power Coalition for Equity and Justice, will also speak during the forum.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. New Orleans Alumnae Chapter continues to institute activities to include, but not limited to, sponsoring voter registration and education awareness, and opposing voter suppression. In May 2018, the Governor of Louisiana signed a House Bill to restore the right to vote to ex-offenders. “We actively encouraged all eligible voters to register during our registration drives”, stated Linda Howard-Curtis, New Orleans Alumnae Chapter President.

Twenty- two African American women founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1913. Approximately six weeks after its inception, they boldly joined the Women’s Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C. Later, in 1920, Congress passed the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in elections. This undertaking was the first act of the Sorority and 106 years later, the organization is still committed to

Political Awareness and Involvement.
