"All We Need is Love"
When we think of the ways to treat mental illness, the first thoughts that come to mind is medication and therapy. One ingredient which any recovery from mental illness is also one which is, curiously and grievously, overlooked in medical handbooks or psychiatric diagnostic, is simply love. Since this word is so fatefully associated with romance and sentimentality. That it is overlooked as a critical role in the healing process of mental illness. Love -whether from a friend, a partner, a child, or a parent has the indomitable ability to rescue us from mental illness. For many afflicted by mental anguish, their illness is a primal self-suspicion that bursts through their defenses that overtakes their faculties leaving them no room for kindest and gentleness, and unforgiving of who they are. When confronted with such agony, a loving friend, family member, or partner can make the difference between winning or losing the battle against mental distress. We should learn that if we hold back love from those afflicted with mental illness we harm the hive of family, friends, partners, and caregivers. To quote the Beatles, “All you need is love.”
As I have mentioned in previous Newsletters, life is a lottery whose first drawing is our birth. We can’t choose our looks, intelligence, health, or station in life. What we must do is to grow into ourselves. Amor Fati! Ever vigilant that we are born with an unknown expiration date. So, we must learn to appreciate every breath and micro moments we encounter in our journey. Regardless if you believe in an afterlife or not. What is certain we exist in the present and should strive to reach our essence, and learn to love and jettison hate and anger.
With this said, we all realize that mortal life is just a matter of time.
