Friends,

Well, I'm afraid I've started off the New Year by failing to keep my resolution of sending this newsletter once a month. The new semester began in late January. I'm teaching a new class, Justice by Means of Democracy. And I've been swamped.

But I haven't been thinking of you any the less for all of that.

I often start my classes with a survey where I ask students to share an issue they're especially focused on and what values they hold inform that selection. I also ask them to share what emotion they connect to that issue. I'm sad to say that this year fear, anxiety, and anger were high. This shouldn't be too suprising given the broader state of the world. But I can confirm: the kids are really feeling it.

At the same time, they bring such brilliance and creativity. Our weekly class session brings me hope. They are ready for fresh thinking and problem-solving to face our problems.
