Democracy in Turbulent Times
"Leadership in Turbulent Times" is certainly an apt title for a book being published in 2018. I had the chance to hear author Doris Kearns Goodwin speak last week at the annual conference for the International City & County Management Association, where she talked about the populist ideals of one of our founders, Theodore Roosevelt who once said that "The government is us. We are the government, you and I." This remains as the foundation of our work at League.

in a Rural County
After conducting a county-wide health assessment, LiveWell Kershaw developed a health improvement plan. In an effort to make Kershaw County the healthiest county in South Carolina, they employed three strategies to improve the health outcomes of residents in the NE part of the county.  Read more

Diversity Dozen: A Tool for Prompting Discussions Related to Race. 
Race is the most important conversation this nation has never really had.The League's Carla Kimbrough is trying to make that conversation easier by unveiling Diversity Dozen, a tool for beginning reflection and prompting discussions related to race.

Amid new technologies and ways of creating connections, a community garden harkens back to the shared task which gave rise to communities in the first place.In Scott Jenkins' article for Strong Towns, he articulates just a few of the myriad benefits of community gardening. 


Host an Election Day Party and Receive a $1,000 Grant
MTV and Civic Nation recently launched #VoteTogether- a new, national campaign to make voting fun and celebratory! Together, they've launched a national contest to award $1000 grants to individuals and organizations that commit to organizing Election Day parties for the 2018 Midterms.  Read more
29 Communities Receive SolSmart Recognition
As part of the 104th ICMA Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, 29 communities received Special Recognition Awards for their incredible work in lowering the cost
of going solar. These communities earned at least 60% of the credits available in at least one of eight criteria categories.  Read more
