WASHINGTON, D.C., July 21, 2020 – Democrats For Life of America (DFLA), an organization representing the beliefs of 21 million pro-life Democrats, applauded Planned Parenthood’s recent decision to revoke the name of Margaret Sanger from a Manhattan clinic.
Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats for Life of America, said of the decision:
“For decades, Planned Parenthood has downplayed their racist history. Today, we are delighted they are finally acknowledging the problematic beliefs of their founder, Margaret Sanger.
For years, we’ve been trying to draw attention to the disproportionate impact of abortion clinics on communities of color. Advocates such as pro-life Democrat Katrina Jackson are outspoken on this issue. As pro-life activists, we must take an intersectional approach and recognize that while abortion is always wrong, its impact on people of color is worse. We are excited to see a growing awareness of the problematic past and present of Planned Parenthood: from Kanye West to Planned Parenthood itself.
There’s nothing progressive about targeting vulnerable pre-born babies, and there’s nothing progressive about the disproportionate impact of abortion on the black community. We look to civil rights icons such as Fannie Lou Hamer, who was also a pro-life advocate, for inspiration. We cannot ignore the lens of race in pro-life issues.
Still, this is only a first step. We look forward to a day where Planned Parenthood is shut down and permanently replaced by women-centric, non-violent clinics.”
