The 2022 Regular Session

Hi Friend,

We've had a busy first few weeks at the Capitol. Along with electing a few new Caucus Officers, our members are already introducing legislation and moving bills through Committees and to the House Floor. Read on for a few highlights, and resources to access videos from Baton Rouge.
Newly elected Rep Matthew Willard, Vice-Chair, and Rep Aimee Freeman, Treasurer, join Chairman Sam Jenkins and Rep Randal Gaines to serve as Officers of the House Democratic Caucus

  • HB 729 by Rep Royce Duplessis would bar certain physical, digital, and other media outlets from publishing a person's mugshot unless in circumstances of public safety or by court order. This bill made it out of the House & Governmental Affairs Committee this week and will head to the House Floor next.

  • Coming up for debate on the House Floor next week is HB 246 by Rep Tammy Phelps. Currently, in Louisiana, there is no grace period between the time that your auto insurance lapses and the time that the OMV can start charging you fines and impose other penalties. If passed, this bill would create a 5-day grace period to give people time to fix any mistakes that may cause a lapse in coverage.

  • HB 64 by Rep Mandie Landry passed without objection from the House Floor and heads to the Senate next. If passed, this bill would clarify that a child is defined as a person under the age of 18 in certain contexts rather than under 17, as certain laws currently read.
We will continue fighting for important issues related to the Minimum Wage (Rep Kyle Green & Rep Denise Marcelle), "Debtor's Prisons" (Rep Rodney Lyons), Voting Rights (Rep Randal Gaines), and more.
