Denver Divers' Art Night

Saturday, November 8, 2014 - 6:00pm

Back by popular demand! Our very own Jamie Walthall will lead the group in learning how to create your own underwater-themed painted masterpiece.

Jamie will choose a stunning image to paint, and then help you learn how to make a masterpiece of that image. If you do not like what she has chosen, you are always welcome to bring your own picture to re-create on canvas! Check out our photo album from the last art night on Facebook. This is something you should absolutely not miss.

Denver Divers will provide refreshments, canvas, paint and brushes, and easel for only $35 per painter. After you produce your masterpiece, you will be able to take your canvas home to display proudly on your wall!

Advanced reservation is required. You may sign up online or call us at Denver Divers, 303-399-2877, to reserve your space. Also, RSVP on Facebook to see who else is coming!

Upcoming Guest Events
Friends of Denver Divers' Events

We continue to bring you relevant news about ocean conservation efforts happening throughout our state.  To help you stay involved, we will begin posting events hosted by like-minded organizations in this column.

Please join us as we help support our favorite non-profits at their upcoming events/fundraising initiatives:

StepUp4theOcean with Teens4Oceans

Date: Ongoing until October 10, 2014

Location: IndieGoGo Website

Teens4Oceans works with local schools to empower our youth to become ocean stewards through experiential learning experiences and educational outreach.

StepUp4theOcean is a new program launched by Teens4Oceans to bring the tools necessary to teach kids about ocean conservation and stewardship. With this new "toolbox", teens from area chapters may choose a topic in which they are interested; reach in to the toolbox to learn more about that topic; and then use the tools to act on their conservation and learning goals! To make this happen, Teens4Oceans needs our help! Tools cost money, so please visit their IndieGoGo Campaign to donate and learn more!

Colorado Ocean Coalition Blue Drinks

Date: Ongoing

Locations Vary

Colorado Ocean Coalition's Blue Drinks is a monthly meeting of ocean-minded individuals that come together for a social gathering somewhere in Colorado to talk about all things "blue"! To find out about the next Blue Drinks, please visit their website.

SSI Freediving Winter Courses

Take the Plunge!

Find out how to better enjoy snorkeling and dive down to deeper depths on one breath of air with our Freediving course. Not only does freediving allow you to experience the underwater world in a bubble-less environment.  It also can allow you to explore depths hard to reach by scuba.

Whether you are just getting your fins wet in the sport, or are more serious about reaching deeper depths, the SSI Freediving Basic course is the perfect first step to safely enjoying this growing sport.

Freediving Basic consists of four course sessions:
  • Class 1: Freediving equipment and safety
    • October 20 from 6-9pm
    • December 8 from 6-9pm
  • Class 2: Review of freediving skills and how to further your freediving career
    • October 22 from 6-9pm
    • December 9 from 6-9pm
  • Pool 1: Learn the basic kicking styles, pool disciplines, and safety skills for freediving
    • October 23 from 6-9pm
    • December 11 from 6-9pm
  • Pool 2: Learn proper headfirst dive/duck dive techniques, breath control and further safety skills
    • October 26 from 9am-12pm
    • December 14 from 9am-12pm
To get certified as a Level 1 Freediver, you will need to complete at least two Freediving sessions in an open body of water. Dates will be announced based on student availability.

We recommend practicing freediving regularly to become a better freediver. Therefore, Denver Divers is now offering FREE practice sessions for our Basic and beyond certified freedivers. Remember, never freedive alone! Join us for any of the following practice sessions:

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week for Climate Change News

by James Temple

October 2, 2014

A pile of scientific studies landed this week that underscored the growing dangers of climate change, as well as the mounting consequences already detectable today.

  • In the journal Nature Communications, researchers using a new model at the University of Cambridge found that: "The massive ice sheet covering most of Greenland is more sensitive to climate change than earlier estimates have suggested, which would accelerate the rising sea levels that threaten coastal communities worldwide."
  • A team from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Carnegie Institute of Science said the calcium carbonate in Australia's Great Barrier Reef has declined by around 40 percent in the last 35 years, as rising carbon dioxide levels turn the oceans more acidic. Why fret about that? "The entire coral ecosystem could collapse and eventually be reduced to piles of rubble. The collapse of this habitat would ultimately lead to the loss of its magnificent and highly diverse flora and fauna."
  • Scientists at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science found that the heat waves and drought that hit Australia in 2013, the continent's hottest year on record, were "virtually impossible without the influence of human-caused global warming."

Last month Hurricane Odile made landfall on the Baja Peninsula, obliterating many of the Mexican communities and towns that populated the area. Los Cabos was most affected, with almost all of the buildings sustaining significant damage and changing the lives of that population forever.

We would like to reach out to our community to help us support their community through two charities we have researched. Please visit the International Community Foundation and/or Waves for Water to find out how you can help the Baja community rebuild!

In Colorado we are very fortunate to have changing seasons with beautiful weather most of the year. As we watch the leaves fall off the trees and notice the chill in the air, it is hard to ignore the fact that summer is over and we will soon be trading in our flip flops for ice scrapers. But we want to make sure you don't pack those flip flops too far away as we have many upcoming ways to escape that winter gloom!

From Cuba to Cozumel to Dominica, Denver Divers wants to make sure we have a little something for everyone in our upcoming group trips. Whether you would like a more adventurous trip to the Socorro Islands, or a laid back getaway to Little Cayman, you can be sure your fellow Denver Divers will be there with you. Visit our trips section for more information.

Falling leaves also means it is Halloween season! Please visit our Scuba Rangers section to learn how to get your kiddos involved in our upcoming Night Dive events. In addition, don't forget to drop by Denver Divers on Halloween weekend for a special treat and to see our staff in all of our Halloween attire!

As always, thank you for being a part of our Denver Divers family!

 Sincerely,

The Staff at Denver Divers

Group Travel Opportunities
Saba for New Year's Eve!
December 27 - January 3, 2015
Only 1 Spot Left!

Saba is not a party island!

The island is a little mountainous jewel of forests and waterfalls that plunge directly into the sea.  If you want to wind down after the holiday madness and celebrate New Year's  in paradise with other Denver Divers blowing bubbles, this is the trip you've been waiting for!

Also known as "The Island of the Unspoiled Queen", Saba's pristine reefs and mountains are an explorer's paradise. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the island, even non-divers will have a glorious stay sleeping in little Dutch houses that cling to the sides of this extinct volcano.

Denver Divers will spend New Year's diving, hiking, and relaxing on Saba.  We want you to join us!

Dive Cuba's Garden of the Queens
February 11-21, 2015
Voted Best Marine Park in the World
by Scuba Diver Magazine

Scuba Diver Magazine made this legally-sanctioned trip to Cuba its cover story in July.   Readers of the magazine voted Garden of the Queens the Best Marine Park in the world in 2014.

Yes - it is expensive. But, in order to make the trip as enjoyable as possible, we contracted with the most comfortable and newest boat available. We will be among a very few divers on the reef, protected since 1996 as a no-take zone that sees only 1,000 permitted divers per year. It has taken our non-profit sponsor - the Ocean Doctor - more than 15 years to make this happen for American divers.

This is a "liveaboard" trip, but this new luxury boat is unlikely to trigger your motion sickness regardless of the weather. To protect the reef, the boat will be docked the entire time. We will travel to dive sites in small dive boats and return to our stationary "liveaboard" between dives.
Needless to say, the diving is awesome. Gardens of the Queen National Park (Jardines de la Reina) is the largest fully-protected marine reserve in the Caribbean. It may also be the healthiest marine ecosystem in the Caribbean - our closest glimpse of the pristine reefs and islands Columbus saw and named for Spain's Queen Isabella 500 years ago. Anderson Cooper dove the Park and hosted a Sixty Minutes segment.  You can see it online through the Ocean Doctor's website.
Dominica Spring Break
March 28 - April 4, 2015

What better way to escape your winter blues than to travel to the beautiful island of Dominica!

Join us for diving, whale and dolphin encounters, hiking, and much more. This family-friendly destination allows divers and non-divers to enjoy all the Caribbean has to offer, with a tranquil setting at a beautiful resort.

Price: $3095
Revillagigedo Islands (Socorro Islands) Shark Research Liveaboard
April 25 - May 4, 2015
Only TWO Spots Left!

You have listened to the stories that fill your dreams with dancing mantas, hammerhead sharks and breaching whales. Now is your chance to make your dreams come true!

Join Denver Divers as we embark on a shark research expedition to the Revillagigedo Islands (Socorro Islands) with Fins Attached Marine Research and Education hosted by Dr. Alex Antoniou and Dr. Mauricio Hoyos Padilla. We will travel on the Southern Sport, one of the newest of the boats to travel to Soccorro with one of the earliest crews to offer recreational divers the chance to dive with pelagics.  Denver Divers has been diving with this Mexican crew since 2009.

Price from $4,400 depending on accommodation chosen on liveaboard.
Little Cayman
May 23-30, 2015

A fairly untouched island with pristine beaches, amazing diving and a rich cultural heritage, Little Cayman is the perfect Caribbean hideaway. From diving Bloody Bay Marine Park to exploring the surrounding wrecks and learning about marine ecology, you will not be bored!

This trip will have a special educational component. Local scientists will come by to give us information on the ecology and environmental sustainability efforts going on throughout the island. Come learn, dive, and support the local environmental movement in a slice of Caribbean Paradise!

Price: $3900
Truk Lagoon Liveaboard
Appx Dates: October 12 -25, 2015

From vast underwater gardens of soft corals to the plentiful ship and airplane wrecks, Truk Lagoon offers something for everyone from the recreational diver to the technical diver looking for adventure!

Denver Divers will be embarking on the Truk Siren for a 10-day tour of Chuuk, or Truk, diving daily with ghostly relics from World War II. Denver Diver instructors will be diving both mixed gases and the Mark VII rebreather.  So there are many opportunities for certified technical divers to reach new depths and for recreational divers to learn first-hand about some of the opportunities in technical diving.

Since the Truk Siren supports rebreather diving, you can get certified on the Poseidon MKVII with our very own Wendel Benjamin and see for yourself what's down deep!

Approximate Price: $8,400 (based on airfare to be released in November, 2014)

Swim School of Denver News

We are just delighted to welcome Cada Koone home from Spain.  She may have blisters and sore thighs, but she'll be proud of herself for completing the famous 500-mile hike known as El outstanding de Santiago.   Congratulations Cada! She will begin teaching again the week of October 14, 2014.

Cada and Emilly Kays deserve more enthusiastic kudos.  They have finished documenting the Swim School's unique training curriculum.  The outstanding swimmers produced by Swim School instructors are the result of a blend of infant and toddler survival classes with the more traditional approach documented by Swim Schools International.  The result has been a very effective transition for kids from learning to float on their backs to rest and breath to outstanding technique applied to common competitive strokes.

You can see the "road map" on the wall at Denver Divers.  We have also produced detailed pamphlets documenting the steps we take to achieve excellent results.

New Instructors

This Fall the Swim School has hired several new instructor candidates.  We welcome Deck Managers Dakota Hodgin, Madisin Martin, and Jessica O'Toole, and stroke instructor Emily Milner.  All are college students and will work around their class hours to apply their significant swim experience to our Swim School students.

Timelia Jones has moved back to her Detroit home. Ross Kluczinske has also moved home to Wisconsin to finish his degree.

Ashland Available Again!
Congratulations to Jolyn Anderson who successfully negotiated a return of early morning hours at the Ashland Rec Center location in The Highlands.  Look for Jolyn to begin teaching survival swimming from 7 am to 9 am several mornings a week.

TRAINING NEWS
Scuba Rangers Fluorescence Night Dive
October 25, 2014
6pm - 9 pm

With an explosion in technology allowing for the production of underwater "black lights" for recreational diving, adult and kid divers alike are discovering the astonishing variety of critters that glow! During this night activity, kids will get a chance to see "corals" and "critters" glowing in the dark.

During the first hour of this three hour class, Adam will explain the basic science behind bioluminescence and fluorescence and how these attributes contribute to the ocean ecosystem. He will give the kids a "hands-on" exercise that will allow them to manipulate real bioluminescent bacteria in the classroom.

Students will then adjourn to the pool to see a variety of manufactured corals and critters glow underwater in the dark. This will be a very fun experience.

In order to allow the kids the best experience, we are asking that, unless the kids have been diving within the past six months, they attend either of two update classes in the coming week. If kids wait until the night of class to refresh their skills, they'll miss valuable time in the classroom and pool.

RANGERS PLUS Junior Open Water Class
October 16 - November 20
5pm - 7:30 pm
Our next Rangers Plus class is scheduled to begin October 16, 2014, at 5 pm.  These weekly, two-and-one half hour classes end on November 20.  Please see the Rangers newsletter or visit the Scuba Scheduler for more information.

Teaching standard open water curriculum to budding junior divers using a slower approach, in a class with up to seven peers, has proven very successful.  Our Rangers instructors make the process much more fun for kids 10 to 13 years old.

However, kids this age can also join our regular adult weekend or weekday classes.  The choice is yours!

TRAINING NEWS
Fall Activities for SCUBA RANGERS
To give our kids' programs a much needed boost in energy, enthusiasm, and creative content, Denver Divers has hired a dedicated coordinator to oversee Rangers Club activities, Scuba
Rangers classes and Rangers Plus classes.  Adam Knudsen is a high school chemistry teacher by trade.

His avocation - the oceans, diving, and kids - allows us to use his inner 12-year-old to create fun and educational programs for our younger Denver Divers.  You'll see the results in the programs he is planning for the coming 2014 - 2015 school year.

We are kicking off our club activities with an amazing night-dive offering for Halloween on October 25, 2014.  Traditionally our Halloween night dive activities  have been our most popular event.  This year we are planning two nights.    A second regular Halloween night dive is planned for November 1, 2014.

However, since it has been a long time since some of our Rangers have been wet, we strongly encourage a Rangers skills review so the kids don't use their time trying to remember what to do!  Skills classes are scheduled for October 9 and October 12 in the late afternoons.
