Denver’s nationally recognized election system is at risk. Mayor Mike Johnston’s proposed 2026 budget would underfund the independent Clerk & Recorder’s Office by $4.5 million — money that is essential to run two high-turnout elections fairly and securely.
This drastic shortfall threatens the integrity, accessibility, and efficiency of Denver’s elections. As Denver Clerk & Recorder Paul López has said: “You can’t run more elections with fewer resources. Fully funding the Clerk & Recorder’s Office is not about politics — it’s about protecting democracy.”
Denver has long been a model for election excellence across the country. But if this cut goes through, thousands of voters could be disenfranchised, and our city’s hard-earned reputation as a leader in voter participation could be lost.
We cannot let a $200 million citywide budget shortfall come at the expense of our democracy. Every Denverite deserves a voting system that is strong, fair, and fully funded.
