Dear Faculty, Staff and Trainees,
May is National Mental Health Month and celebrates Children's Mental Health Awareness Week. I want to thank the entire Department for your hard work and dedication in serving the citizens of Maryland and beyond. Next May, I would like for us to sponsor a celebratory event highlighting our work in expanding access to quality care with a focus on Mental Wellness. I am looking for volunteers. Anyone interested in helping to work on this event, please contact me!
Additionally, the UMMC has identified Mental Health and Addiction as a top priority over the next three years in their West Baltimore community outreach efforts. We will have opportunities to participate in engagement activities with community residents, attend street fairs providing education and service information and address Stigma among residents, community health workers, and all of our constituents. Please be prepared to respond to these opportunities as they evolve over the next three years!
And finally, as we move into the summer months I want to remind all of our faculty, staff, and trainees to plan for well-deserved relaxing and fun time with family and friends. Take care of yourselves, including tending to your own mental wellness!

Respectfully recognizing all,
Jill A. RachBeisel, MD

Kay Connor showed invaluable expertise amid the fallout from the arrest of an Anne Arundel elementary school teacher, and over 20 CPS reports over a sexual abuse scandal.
In the words of another faculty member:
"Kay was very helpful in connecting with an appropriate resource to offer evidence-based education and outreach to very upset and overwhelmed parents and families and now they are working on scheduling a webinar for next week. I discussed case with one of our Child Protection Team pediatricians and our concern that families have been sharing info on non-evidence based resources that they have been seeking out so I am grateful that there will be an appropriate forum for parents to learn about better resources and options. One of the several families I spoke with was referred to us via Daniel Mullins at School of Pharmacy since he had a former trainee whose family was impacted, and he also expressed his gratitude for the timely information and support. Kay also did some rapid networking with NCTSN to quickly obtain updated educational materials. Really a huge help for these families!"

Debbie Williams was just recognized for 50 years of service to UMMC, including more than a decade spent working at our own Department of Psychiatry.
Congratulations on a long and distinguished career, Debbie!

I want to call attention to the great work being done by our Psychiatric Assessment and Referral Center (PARC) for all of the great services this center provides to both hospitals to ensure that our behavioral health patients are appropriately reviewed for admission, obtain a pre-authorization, review all commitment paperwork, and collaborate with our admitting psychiatric providers, as well as for facilitating placement arrangements for those BH patients in need of admission and services that we cannot accommodate.

Welcoming a New Addition to Our Department | |
In a few days, Dr. Samantha Miller will be joining our Department.
Dr. Miller trained in psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. Before moving to Maryland in 2022, she worked for several years at Montefiore providing psychiatric care for patients in an opioid treatment program. She has a special interest in exploring the benefits of engaging art and nature for health and recovery, and is enjoying getting to know the city of Baltimore!

May is the final month for community building circles for this academic year. For FY25, we will be offering monthly open community building circles for those who have not yet been able to attend. Circles will now be offered on a regular basis as a part of the demonstration of our department’s commitment to establishing a culture that supports Belonging and Inclusion. Please note, circles remain voluntary and there is no expectation for anyone who is uncertain or uncomfortable participating in circles to attend them or feel forced to attend. We encourage colleagues who have attended circle to continue to invite others to participate and give more context to the experience if needed.

The room number is P1H02. The hospital address is 22 S. Greene Street. There will be a sign on the door.
