Issue 43 | October 5, 2023

Editor's Note: With Dr. RachBeisel abroad, Dr. Gloria Reeves has agreed to step in for this month's Department newsletter issue in her capacity as Research Vice Chair. Below, you'll see her "Vice Chair Letter" on strides the Department is making to create new leadership opportunities.

The Accidental Leader: Cultivating New Leadership Pathways for Junior Faculty

Early in my career, I took on a few leadership roles that felt somewhat undeserved or fairly random. I was asked to take charge of a school of medicine committee after rapid turnover of two other leaders. My qualifications? I showed up with farewell cookies and an agenda item at our monthly meeting. I also served as Medical Director of an outpatient program and ran our weekly team meeting, knowing full well that I was the only one free to take on this role as the more senior supervisor was too busy with cross-coverage duties.

These early leadership opportunities were exciting, but also confusing. I really didn’t know a lot about how to run a team or develop program initiatives because I had spent close to a decade serving in a student or a trainee role. Unlike my clinical and research work, I did not have any “leadership supervision,” and I would not have presumed to sign up for leadership training because I felt like I was too junior for that kind of opportunity.

Fortunately, our current junior faculty are more empowered to think deliberately about their potential interests and contributions in leadership roles. Based on feedback received by the Faculty Retention Committee, the Department is creating a new leadership opportunity specifically for junior research faculty.

The inaugural Junior Research Faculty Representative position will be open for applications this week. This opportunity was also designed to address common challenges and barriers to junior leadership roles by structuring the position as time-limited (new representatives will be selected each academic year to rotate this opportunity and avoid major time burden), peer-supported (two junior faculty will serve at a time), and mentor-guided (representatives will have a de-brief session with me or a senior research leader after each meeting).

This position will also be impactful because the representatives will participate in a monthly Research Steering Committee meeting. This committee is comprised of the Research leaders throughout our Department, and the members develop and oversee research initiatives and activities. This position will help us to learn more from the unique perspectives and terrific ideas of our junior colleagues, and it will allow us to support their leadership development.

This leadership role was also developed to be responsive to the Department DEI priority of Inclusion. I hope that everyone eligible considers this opportunity. Your voice is needed, and no cookies required for a seat at the table.

Sincerely,

Gloria Reeves, MD

Research Vice Chair, Department

of Psychiatry

MACS's work was also highlighted in The Southern Maryland Chronicle for its collaboration with Maryland Secretary Laura Herrera Scott in discussing how healthcare providers can play a crucial role in combating the opioids overdose crisis.

Restorative Justice is one mechanism we are using to promote Inclusion and Belonging. Our DEI champions will participate in a community building circle on Thurs, Oct 5. The department will begin to offer community building circles starting mid-October to individual working groups using a rolling sign up which will be announced soon.

A Message from Maryland's Secretary of Health,

Dr. Laura Herrera Scott

The requirement for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder was eliminated at the end of 2022 to make lifesaving treatment more accessible. The Maryland Addiction Consultation Service (MACS) recently collaborated with Maryland Secretary of Health, Dr. Laura Herrera Scott, to produce a video message about providing this evidence-based treatment and how MACS can support providers and their practices.

In the Media

Dr. Eric Weintraub was quoted in an NPR article, "Fentanyl Mixed With Cocaine Or Meth Is Driving the '4th Wave' of the Overdose Crisis." As he observes, stimulants increase vasoconstriction and increase the body's need for oxygen, at the same time that opioids decrease respiration, creating an even more dangerous combination.

Additionally, Dr. Weintraub's proposal for the local government and UMSOM to work together to pursue a federal grant for UMSOM's telemedicine vehicle to treat local drug overdoses was featured in Maryland Today's recent article, "Roads to Recovery."
