Dr. McCree-Huntley serves as a chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Staff Recruitment and Retention Sub-Committee. Sylvia is a dedicated DEI Champion, playing a pivotal role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the University of Maryland Hospital, the midtown and downtown campuses. She collaborates closely with different Human Resource Departments to improve awareness of DEI work, particularly in job postings. Dr. McCree-Huntley has not only attended the National Inclusive Excellence Leadership Accelerator Series but recently completed the Restorative Justice in Academic Medicine Facilitator Training. | | | |
Welcome to the start of FY24! Our theme for this year is Belonging and Inclusion.
Belonging refers to an individual sense of acceptance. Inclusion refers to the behaviors and cultural norms that make people feel welcome.
The first department DEI initiative for this year was to sponsor participation in the AAMC Restorative Justice Facilitator training in Washington, DC from Aug 23-25. Restorative Justice refers to a process of conflict resolution that is meant to promote non-punitive ways to address harm in the workplace.
Your restorative justice facilitators are: Anique Forrester, Sylvia Huntley, Madeline Marks, and Amanda Jones. Dr. RachBeisel is also a trained facilitator and will inform our processes moving forward. Restorative practices will also allow for the beginning of a process where we can deepen our communication and relationships at work. We will begin to introduce some of the foundational concepts surrounding restorative practices this month at our DEI champion and Diversity committee meetings. We look forward to continuing what has been a 5 year process directed at transformative change in this department.
DEI champion meeting – Sept 7 @10am
Diversity Committee meeting – Sept 28 @4pm

Dr. Sarah Edwards and Kelly Coble, LCSW-C, contributed to a recent article published in JAACAP.
Titled "The Provision and Utilization of Telehealth Within Academic Mental Health Clinics in North America During the COVID-19 Pandemic," the paper documents the experience of 14 academic child and adolescent psychiatry programs in transitioning to and managing telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal was to understand how programs adopted and sustained telehealth during the pandemic. Survey questions addressed telehealth practices (e.g., policies, support resources), monthly service utilization, telehealth modality (videoconferencing vs. telephony), and missed appointments.
