Wigton Heritage Groundbreaking Ceremony
|
|
On June 24th the campus community gathered to ceremonially break ground on its own campus welcome center -- the Wigton Heritage Center -- as well as launch the renovation of Wittson Hall and the McGoogan Library.
Robert Wigton, MD
, is a 1969 alumnus of the College of Medicine who served as professor in internal medicine at UNMC and in several key administrative areas in the College of Medicine, including associate dean for graduate medical education. The Wigton legacy spans three generations with several physicians within the family serving UNMC.

New fellowship to train physicians in hospice, palliative medicine approved
|
|
|
Al Fisher, MD, PhD
., Chief of the division of Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Medicine shares that the new one-year fellowship program will help alleviate a shortage of physicians trained in hospice and palliative medicine. The fellowship will also expand educational capacity for additional learning including medical students, nursing students and resident physician in the end-of-life care. To read the article

for being selected to serve as a member of the ACC.20 Program Committee. The ACC.20 takes place in Chicago in March 2020.
The Program Committee has the responsibility for developing and finalizing the overall education program for ACC.20 and ensuring that it is current, cohesive and complimentary. Dr Velagapudi was asked based upon her experience in education and live programing from a large group of nominees.

National ACP Scientific Meeting in Philadelphia
|
|
At the National ACP Scientific meeting in Philadelphia this past April,
Chris Smith, MD,
FACP,
won the Early Career Poster Competition in the Clinical Research category.
Poster title: “It makes me respect what they do a whole lot more.” Evaluation of how interprofessional point-of-care ultrasound education impacts participants’ perceptions of interprofessional learning and stereotypes.

Nebraska Medical Center has qualified as a top performer by the Society of Hospital Medicine in the Spring 2019 Glycemic Control eQUIPS Benchmark Report in both critical care and non-critical care categories. Top performers, such as

Yiannis Chatzizisis, MD,
cardiology received formal notification of receiving an R01 grant last month (more information coming soon!). He also recently received an industry grant from Bonston Scientific for 180k for one year. The title of the study is "Computational Testing of a Novel Purpose-Built Everolimus-Eluting Stent" and the goal is to integrate patient-specific coronary artery bifurcation anatomy, with an individualized and innovative computational modeling approach, to virtually test the properties of a novel stent platform. Congrats!

Use of a Coordinated Social Media Strategy to Improve Dissemination of Research and Collect Solutions Related to Workforce Gender Equity.

New Faces or Committee Involvement
|
Please welcome Jessica Quick, who started July 1st, as the Infectious Disease Division Administrator and Specialty Care Clinic Manager. For the past 8 years, Jessica was the Administrator of Colon and Rectal Surgery Inc and The Colonoscopy Center Inc. Prior to her roles at Colon and Rectal Surgery Inc., Jessica was the Central Business Office Manager at the Health Inventures OAIC. She brings with her solid experience in clinical operations, finance, human resource management, revenue cycle and administration of a fellowship program. Jessica has a MBA from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from UNO. She will be a terrific asset to the division as well as the department and the overall organization. Jessica's office is located in the Infectious Disease Division on the 5
th
floor of MSB.
