Reading with Toddlers Reduces Harsh Parenting, Enhances Child Behavior, Finds Study Led by Dr. Jimenez
People who regularly read with their toddlers are less likely to engage in harsh parenting and the children are less likely to be hyperactive or disruptive, a Rutgers-led study finds. Previous studies have shown that frequent shared reading prepares children for school by building language, literacy and emotional skills, but the study by Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School researchers may be the first to focus on how shared reading affects parenting.

The  study , led by  Manuel Jimenez, MD, MS, FAAP , assistant professor and Chancellor's Scholar, Departments of Pediatrics, and Family Medicine and Community Health, published along with a  video abstract  in the  Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics , suggests additional benefits from shared reading -- a stronger parent-child bond and less hyperactivity and attention problems in children.

The Boggs Center Celebrates the Graduation of the 2018-2019 NJLEND Fellows at the Third Annual Maternal and Child Health Leadership Symposium
On May 10, The Boggs Center celebrated the graduation of the 2018-2019 NJLEND Fellows  (right)  at the New Jersey Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NJLEND) program’s Third Annual Maternal and Child Health Leadership Symposium. Held in New Brunswick at PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital, the event featured a keynote address, Life Course Research and Community Engagement to Improve Autism Outcomes, from Paul T. Shattuck, PhD, associate professor at Drexel University’s A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, and was attended by those from the Rutgers community, New Jersey’s Department of Children and Families, SPAN Parent Advocacy Network, and other state and community organizations. During the NJLEND Leadership Projects Poster Session, attendees had the opportunity to learn from each Fellow about the leadership project they conducted over the course of the academic year.

Part of a national network, The Boggs Center’s NJLEND program provides graduate-level interdisciplinary training aimed at preparing the next generation of health and allied health leaders to address the needs of children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), related developmental disabilities, and other maternal and child health populations. Funding for LEND programs is authorized by the Autism CARES Act and is administered through the federal Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Bariatric Surgery Can Be Safe, Effective for Adolescents, Study Find
Pediatricians often are reluctant to recommend bariatric surgery for teenagers, but a new study has found it is a justifiable treatment for adolescents with persistent extreme obesity, if they can maintain a healthy lifestyle afterward.

The study, led by  Ahmed Khattab, MD , pediatric endocrinologist and assistant professor of pediatrics, was published in  The Journal of Pediatrics .

"If we look at obesity as a disease with the real possibility of eventual organ system failure and special health concerns for adolescents, we need to ask whether health care practitioners are doing enough to manage it," says Dr. Khattab. "The objective evidence shows that, under the right circumstances and with the right patients, bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for adolescents with obesity."
