Children's Health

Emma's Journey Through Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery

Emma loves building LEGO worlds, baking, and filling every room with warmth. But a year ago, frequent seizures began to take that away. What started at school quickly became a daily struggle, and Emma withdrew from the things she loved. After trying multiple medications without success, her parents feared they were losing her. Read more here!

Celebrating Emily's Milestone

A year after undergoing brain tumor surgery with Dr. Mark Souweidane, Emily returned for a very different kind of visit—a joyful taco party filled with celebration. Her one-year milestone was marked with a thoughtful surprise and plenty of smiles all around.

Department Updates

It was announced that Dr. Nitsana Spigland, Professor of Clinical Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, will step down as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery effective July 1, 2026. She will remain on faculty, continuing her work in teaching, mentorship, and complex surgical care.

Dr. Spigland has served in leadership roles at Weill Cornell for three decades, including as Chief since 2006, following earlier appointments in academic medicine and surgical training in New York and Montreal. Her career has been marked by a strong commitment to education and clinical excellence.

We are pleased to announce that Peter Chiu, MD, will be joining the team on September 1, 2026, as a congenital heart surgeon and site director for pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery.

Dr. Chiu comes from Boston Children’s Hospital, where he served as an attending cardiac surgeon and Surgical Director of the Pulmonary Artery Reconstruction Program. He completed his medical degree at Columbia University, cardiothoracic surgery training at Stanford University, and fellowship training in congenital heart surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he also holds a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School.

His clinical focus includes complex congenital heart disease, particularly pulmonary artery reconstruction, vascular rings, airway compression, single ventricle surgery, and aortic valve repair in infants, children, and young adults. His research centers on improving outcomes and developing predictive tools for congenital heart surgery.

Dr. Chiu brings extensive experience in both clinical care and research and will be a strong addition to the program.

Research

Drs. Ria Goswami and Ashley Nelson were awarded the 2026 PacBio + Weill Cornell Genomic Resource Core Facility Microbial Sequencing SMRT Grant for their project on the role of the nasopharyngeal microbiome in virus-specific immunity among children with respiratory viral co-infections. Their work will examine bacterial and viral communities in children with RSV to better understand how these factors influence mucosal immune responses.

Advocacy

It’s World Immunization Week

This week marks World Immunization Week, a global initiative led by the World Health Organization to highlight the critical role vaccines play in protecting people of all ages from preventable diseases.

We all know that vaccines are one of the most powerful tools in public health, saving millions of lives each year, so it’s heartening that for at least one week, the world is rallying around the power of vaccines. This year’s theme of “Vaccines for Every Generation” encourages everyone to take a moment to check in on their vaccination status and to help spread the word, not the disease.

Look for daily posts on our department’s Instagram and share your experiences from PAS, using these hashtags #VaccinesWork #WorldImmunizationWeek.

Announcements

Dr. Alex Huttle was recently featured in Medscape discussing the importance of universal suicide risk screening for youth over age 12. A new national survey highlights a gap in implementation, driven by limited awareness and a shortage of mental health resources—resulting in missed opportunities to identify at-risk youth, many of whom see a healthcare provider in the year before an attempt. Join the Faculty Wellness Committee!

We’re inviting faculty members to get involved with the Faculty Wellness Committee. This group plans events throughout the year that promote connection, collaboration, and fun, gathers faculty feedback and ideas, and works closely with department leadership to support wellness initiatives and opportunities.

If you’re interested in joining, they meet every other month on Thursdays at noon. Please reach out to Dr. Susan Bostwick for more information.

The department offers confidential peer to peer support for pediatric faculty who are involved in a lawsuit or RCA. Modeled on the program the WCM ED uses, our department has 5 trained faculty members who are available to faculty for peer support. One of these faculty members will reach out to anyone who is involved in a lawsuit or RCA to offer short term peer support, to share resources and a trained ear to listen. In addition, any faculty who wants to reach out for peer support related to keepsafes, morbidities, QA reviews, etc, may do so by contacting Dr. Sandra Rolston.
