Advocacy

For the first time in many years, the AMA has two pediatricians serving on its board of trustees that is comprised of 21 physicians representing a variety of specialties. The two pediatricians joining the board are Dr. Melissa Garretson, a pediatric ER doctor from Texas, and Dr. Lase Ajayi, a pediatric palliative care doctor from California. With a further nod to the importance of pediatrics, the AMA House of Delegates adopted several pediatric-related policies that the organization will champion. Advocating for the following issues supports better access to care and health equity while bolstering the sustainability of pediatric subspecialty careers.

Payment parity for Medicaid

The AMA calls for payment parity with Medicare for similar services provided to pediatric patients covered by Medicaid and improved value-based payment models for pediatric subspecialists.

Funding for graduate medical education

In further efforts to improve the pediatric workforce, the AMA adopted policy to advocate for increased funding for the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) payment program.

Recognizing migration status

The AMA adopted policy recognizing migration status as a social determinant of health and align its policy with the Work Health Organization.

Shout Outs

Kassidy Scott, summer intern, wanted to express her heartfelt thanks to Dr. Osorio for the wonderful experience she had. Dr. Osorio's mentorship has given her a great understanding of the importance of quality improvement and patient safety in healthcare, particularly within the Department of Pediatrics. The experiences she gained, from participating in the QI team meetings to contributing to PI and US data projects, were definitely eye-opening and have sparked her interest in this sector of healthcare! Because of the internship, she is now seeking to integrate QI into her journey and career as a PA!

Share your appreciation for colleagues by submitting a shout-out for inclusion in the department newsletter here!
