From the Chair

Alumni & friends:

It is a privilege to step into the role of Chair of the Department of Public Administration. I want to begin by recognizing Dr. Roy Heidelberg, who recently wrapped up six outstanding years as Chair. His leadership has strengthened our department in many ways, and we are grateful for the thoughtfulness and care he brought to the role.

As I learn how to do this new job, I have found myself reflecting on learning itself – not only on the ways in which I am personally learning to lead, but also on how much our department has learned and evolved over more than four decades and during my fourteen years at LSU. That evolution is visible in many ways: our transition from the Public Administration Institute to a department, the launch and growth of the online MPA program, and the creation of an undergraduate minor.

These changes reflect a willingness to identify needs, recognize opportunities, and learn from what works (and what doesn’t). As I step into the role, I am grateful for the strong foundation and spirit of curiosity that characterize our department – qualities that have been shaped over the years by our past chairs and by our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. I see the department’s future as something we will continue to build together, learning from our experiences as we identify new needs, opportunities, and priorities. If you have ideas about where our programs could go, opportunities we should explore, or ways we could better prepare and connect our students, I would love to hear from you.

Public Affairs Minor Marks First Year

The first year of our new public affairs minor is in the books, and we are proud of the progress made in such a short time. The minor prepares students to pursue careers in leadership of public, nonprofit, and private organizations, as well as in public policy and government affairs. Our coursework focuses on building essential skills in public and nonprofit leadership, budgeting, data-driven decision-making, and policy analysis.

Students in PADM 3020: Funding Government: Revenue, Taxation, and Public Policy, taught by Min Su, even had the opportunity to take their lessons directly into the halls of the Louisiana State Capitol. Meeting with House Fiscal Division staff, they explored firsthand how budgeting shapes the state's priorities and policies. (pictured above)

"I chose to minor in public affairs because the field touches every part of our lives, whether it's public health initiatives, public education, or who picks up our trash in the morning. I recently interned at the Louisiana Department of Health, and everything I learned in class applied to that work."

Welcoming the Public Administration Ambassadors

We are thrilled to introduce the Public Administration Ambassadors. This is a committee of volunteers established for the purposes of promoting and supporting the educational programs of our department. The ambassadors will help facilitate mentorship, internships and employment for graduates of the department’s programs, and they will also assist the department with securing external support and fundraising.

Holly Peterson

New research provides clues for crisis communicators

After a devastating wildfire or a record-breaking hurricane, some citizens push for policy shifts and regulations, while others focus on individual preparedness. Why can the exact same crisis often push neighbors down these different psychological paths? A new study co-authored by Holly Peterson maps how the human brain processes extreme weather events, leading to new guidance for policymakers and first-responders trying to shape their messaging to better meet a critical moment.

Roy Heidelberg

Highlighting the Governor's Fellows Program

The process of shaping and implementing public policy demands rigorous research, cross-agency collaboration and active leadership. Through the Governor’s Fellows Program, university students from across Louisiana can step beyond the classroom and directly engage with that work right at the source. With coursework taught by Roy Heidelberg providing an academic anchor, this competitive summer initiative immerses students in the day-to-day operations of state leadership.
