JULY 2020

The Department of Watershed Management wishes everyone a happy and safe 4th of July Holiday!
It’s Summer Time and Cooling Off is Easy
Temperatures in the City of Atlanta during the summer can be brutal. After all, the city’s nickname is Hotlanta. In the July issue of Water Splash, we invite you to cool off with a visit to some of Atlanta’s scenic greenspaces, wetlands, and shady trails that people of all ages can enjoy. One might think that these special places are off the beaten path, but they’re located in the heart of the city, and sometimes in your own back yard.
McDaniel Branch Wetlands
This 12-acre property is nestled between the south Atlanta and High Point area of the city. When you visit, you can enjoy plantings of a variety of native plant species, including wild rye, river oats, black- and brown-eyed Susan, partridge pea, ironweed, Joe-Pye weed, and Mexican hat coneflower. The Wetlands is also a great location for bird-watching enthusiasts; it is home to variety of bird species, including the Wood Thrush, Green Heron, Orchard Oriole, Indigo Bunting, Common Yellowthroat, and Red-headed Woodpecker. Click here for more information on McDaniel Branch Wetlands.
Cascade Springs Nature Preserve
Located in southwest Atlanta, the park’s 120 acres of green space and a wide trail network explores a tumbling waterfall, a wildlife-filled forest, and trickling springs that feed the park’s many streams. The hilly forest is a retreat from the surrounding city, and home to wildlife including deer, birds, and turtles. Click here for more information on Cascade Springs Nature Preserve.
Morningside Nature Preserve
The Morningside Nature Preserve is 33.1 acres of woods in northeast Atlanta that is bisected by the South Fork Peachtree Creek. There are about 2 miles of trails on both sides of the creek. The Morningside Nature Preserve has two trailheads: one at Wellbourne Road and the other at the Georgia Power Substation on Lenox Road. A suspension bridge over the creek connects the trails on both sides. Dog owners frequently bring their dogs to play on the shore and shallow water under the bridge, so the area has become known as Atlanta's "dog beach." Click here for more information on the Morningside Nature Preserve.

Stay Safe Outside!
Hydrate... and Avoid Heat Stroke
Exposure to heat can cause illness and even death. The most serious heat illness is heat stroke. Other heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash should also be avoided.

There are precautions you can take any time temperatures are high:

1. While outside this summer, drink as much water as possible. The Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA) advises one pint of water per hour during the day’s warmest times.

2. Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing. Excess layers or articles that fit too tightly prevent proper blood cooling. Also, light colored clothing will absorb less heat than darker pieces.

3. Avoid strenuous activity in the warmest weather and identify shaded areas and cool spots for when you feel overheated.

Avoiding heat stroke begins with conditioning your body for hot temperatures. Hydration is key to propersweat and cool down, so fill up before, during and after you go out.
Water Quality is Now Report Available

Watershed Management is proud to present the 2019 City of Atlanta Water Quality Report. The report details the source of Atlanta’s drinking water, its components, and how our water measures up to standards set by regulatory agencies. We thank you for your support in our mission to provide clean, safe drinking water to all of our customers. Click here to download the report.
No Wipes in Pipes

Wipes and other non-disposable items are causing a crisis to residential sewer pipes, and our wastewater system and treatment facilities. According to the Value of Water Campaign, toilet paper has become scarce during the pandemic, and people are substituting paper towels and baby wipes. People have also been using more disinfectant wipes to clean and disinfect their homes. These products do not break down easily, are not meant to be flushed, and can cause millions of dollars in system and equipment damage.

Click here to view the digital brochure and PSA on how  flushing non-disposable wipes costs all of us in Atlanta big bucks and how you can  be a part of the solution!
City of Atlanta Water and Sewer Appeals Board
If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your billing dispute or adjustment request, an appeal to the City of Atlanta Water and Sewer Appeals Board may be requested per City Ordinance Section 154-29 within seven days of the Department of Watershed Management’s dispute resolution decision. The Water and Sewer Appeals Board is a group of citizens appointed by the Atlanta City Council to conduct hearings to review the dispute. You have a right to an appeal only after your bill has gone through the formal dispute process and a decision has been rendered. Don’t Be A Victim
Sunny skies and warm temperatures will undoubtedly be calling on Atlantans to leave their homes and hit the road to good times this summer. Rest assured, it also brings opportunistic criminals outside to see what they can take from’ unsuspecting victims. Auto thefts and car break-ins can ruin any outdoor adventure – but many of these crimes are easily preventable. Slider crimes are a type of crime that occur quickly when thieves “slide” into the cars of distracted drivers who may be pumping gas or leave their car unlocked while going into a convenience store. APD asks that when you stop to get gas or make a quick stop at the ATM for your road trip, lock your car door, take your keys with you and pay attention to your surroundings. Leaving your car unlocked or leaving your keys in the car and not being aware of your surroundings is a sure way to become a victim. If you see something suspicious, call or text 9-1-1. Together we can keep the city safer and get criminals off the streets.
