Commissioner Powell Receives
WaterNow Alliance 2019 Impact Award
In March 2019, the WaterNow Alliance selected City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management Commissioner Kishia L. Powell as a recipient of its 2019 Impact Award, in recognition of her “exemplary leadership in envisioning and implementing the first-ever publicly issued outcomes-based financing deal." The award was announced at the WaterNow Alliance’s ‘Tap into Resilience’ Summit in Austin, TX. In January 2019, the Department issued the first publicly offered Environmental Impact Bond (EIB) for green infrastructure projects in the Proctor Creek watershed. The $14 million EIB will provide financing for six projects to manage stormwater and alleviate flooding while providing workforce opportunities and access to greenspace. Commissioner Powell’s vision enabled project partners to work through a myriad of complex engineering, financing and procurement challenges to successfully secure the financing for large-scale green infrastructure solutions, while minimizing risk to Atlanta’s rate payers. Impact investment firm Quantified Ventures noted that “her commitment to innovation and pursuit of high-value, impactful services to vulnerable communities was invaluable in enabling this critical water resilience project to come together."

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Publishes a Report Using
City of Atlanta Case Study
Chattahoochee Riverkeeper recently published a report about using green infrastructure to manage stormwater runoff. Using the City of Atlanta as a case study, the report introduces green infrastructure, outlines Atlanta’s green infrastructure requirements, and presents three examples of typical developments that meet those requirements. This report can be a resource for anyone interested in green infrastructure, especially municipalities working to promote green infrastructure strategies.

Atlanta Tree Conservation Commission
Do you love the shade of a big tree on a hot Atlanta day? Did you know that urban trees provide many environmental benefits? A shade tree near your home means that your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard, which means lower demand on power plants, less pollution, and lower power bills for you! Leafy tree canopies also absorb and slow storm water, which prevents flooding and erosion. Our hard-working urban trees also make our city more beautiful. That’s why Atlanta’s tree protection ordinance requires that you obtain a permit before removing trees (including all hardwoods ≥6 inches and pines ≥12 inches in diameter). Permits are free of charge at 404-865-8487 or online

under Department of City Planning, Arborist Division.
