Public Service Recognition Week
During the week, we honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county, and local government employees. Public servants across the country use this occasion to educate others about the work they do and why they have chosen public service careers, as well as the many ways government services make life better for all of us.

DWM Wins Statewide Award for
Erosion and Sedimentation Control Program
The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) was named the 2020 Local Issuing Authority (LIA) of the Year by the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) during their virtual awards ceremony on March 17, 2021.
There are 322 Local Issuing Authorities in the State of Georgia. The LIA’s responsibility is to enforce state environmental regulations related to construction and land disturbance. This includes reviewing and approving erosion, sedimentation, and pollution control plans, inspecting construction sites to protect surface waters and stream buffers, and responding to citizen complaints.
DWM received the award for its commitment to environmental protection and dedication to stewardship.
“It is not often that regulators win awards, but we are proud and honored to be highlighted in this manner,” said DWM Commissioner Mikita Browning. “We look forward to continue working with the Commission and District to fulfill our mission of protecting our soil and water resources through a strong, but fair, approach that holds polluters accountable.”
The GSWCC was formed to protect, conserve, and improve the soil and water resources of the State of Georgia. The Commission helps local conservation districts, landowners, and governments wisely use and maintain the soil and water resources for all Georgians. May is American Wetlands Month
American Wetlands Month is a time when the EPA and partners from federal, state, tribal, local, non-profit and private sector organizations celebrate the vital importance of wetlands to our Nation’s ecological, economic, and social health. Wetlands help improve water quality and supply, reduce flooding and provide critical habitat for plants, fish and wildlife.
On Saturday, May 1, 2021, DWM's Office of Watershed Protection hosted a volunteer creek clean-up at our McDaniel Branch Ponds and Wetlands, and adjacent Arthur Langford, Jr. Park.
Organized by the South River Watershed Alliance (SRWA), volunteers representing SRWA, as well as neighboring Joyland and High Point Estates neighborhoods, came out to clean-up litter in the creek. Volunteers were able to collect approximately 30 bags of trash as well as six tires and a couple of scooters between the two sites. It was a beautiful morning to be outside and DWM is very thankful to have wonderful partners who are committed to keeping our creeks clean!
