Depression Fueled Life’s Purpose: Meet Mental Health Advocate, Healer and Beacon of Hope, Claudia Toro, Senior at Union College
As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting mental well-being, we are proud to spotlight Claudia Toro, a graduate student in accounting. Hers is a story of hope, courage, and overcoming adversity.
What is your personal/professional story?
I feel privileged to have been born in this wonderful country. After growing up in Colombia, I decided to return to the U.S. at the age of 18, knowing that here I would find greater opportunities and the potential for a better quality of life. My first priority was learning English, followed by enrolling in college.
Unfortunately, I have battled depression since childhood, which presented significant challenges and ultimately led me to pause my studies indefinitely. This was deeply frustrating because I have always been passionate about learning, but the fear of my illness disrupting my progress remained ever-present.
In 2023, as an adult, I made the life-changing decision to resume my education at Union College of Union County, NJ. Looking back, I can confidently say it was the best decision I have ever made. I am now on track to graduate with a degree in accounting in the spring of 2025. This achievement is not solely due to my effort and dedication but also to the exceptional support I’ve received from the advisors at EOF and Universal Accessibility Services at UCNJ. Their accommodations and guidance have been pivotal in helping me achieve my goals.
Where does your passion to serve come from?
My passion for serving comes from the example set by my parents. Growing up, I witnessed them go through many hardships, but despite their struggles, they never hesitated to help others. Their generosity and selflessness taught me the importance of giving, no matter the circumstances. I’ve seen how a small act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life, and that has inspired me to do the same. I enjoy positively impacting others, whether through simple acts of kindness or by supporting them during challenging times.
It’s a way for me to give back for all the good I’ve received throughout my life. Just as others have helped me grow and overcome obstacles, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment when I can help someone else on their journey. Serving others allows me to contribute to making the world a better place, even in small ways.
What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?
I had a near-death experience in 2021, which made me realize that depression is not the end. With psychological therapy and, when necessary, medication, you can lead a more manageable life rather than feeling like everything is meaningless. It also taught me that life consists of both good and bad days. Being aware of this helps you face life differently. I also learned that crises are not forever, and in my case, this experience was decisive in setting goals and making plans for the future.
How can GlobalMindED help you realize your goals?
GlobalMindED can help me achieve my goal of becoming a spokesperson for depression awareness among students of all ages, as I know that many individuals, both young and adult, have been unable to fulfill their educational goals due to a lack of knowledge or the stigma surrounding this illness. Depression not only affects personal fulfillment but also impacts the quality of life for those of us who suffer from it. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving well-being and enabling more people to access education as a tool for their personal development and empowerment.
