Derry Township Celebrates Arbor Day
|
The Derry Township Board of Supervisors has proclaimed Saturday, April 27 Arbor Day in Derry Township. The Township has been granted Tree City, USA status for over 25 years for their commitment to preserving the urban forest.
A ceremony will be held at Gelder Park, Gelder Drive, at 9:00 a.m. to include a tree planting. The public is invited to attend.

Hershey All Things Diversity Announces 2019-20 Sessions
|
Hershey All Things Diversity is planning for next year's community educational sessions. The program is underwritten by Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine, The Hershey Company and Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company.
A light supper and dessert will be provided to attendees. The sessions are free, but seating is limited and advance registration is required.

Are You Ready for Bike to School Day?
|
Bike to School Day on May 8th! The Township of Derry, Derry Township Police Department, and Derry Township School District are teaming up to encourage families to join others from across the country in celebrating National Bike to School Day.

ittany Lion will be at the Memorial Field parking lot (at Cocoa and Elm) from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. to cheer on the elementary school students as they pedal to school.
The first 200 arriving students will receive a flashing safety light donated by Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. Bike safety checks will be offered to students and they will receive a healthy snack.

Students who live too far away to safely bike to school can get a ride part of the way!
Groups will meet promptly at 8:00 a.m. at the tennis courts on Areba and Homestead. Another group will meet on the sidewalk at the corner of Elm and Linden. Meet up locations will also be posted online at the Hershey Elementary PTO (K-5) Facebook page. The groups will safely make their way to school together.
Bike to School raises awareness of the need for safe routes for bicycling and walking and emphasizes physical activity, crosswalk enforcement, and reducing traffic congestion and its effect on the environment.

The Hershey Public Library will hold a Community Blood Drive on
Monday, April 22 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., 701 Cocoa Avenue.
The Central PA Bloodmobile will be in the library's parking lot. Please come to donate a pint of blood. ID is required to donate. No appointment is necessary.

It's Time for the Annual Fishing Derby
|
The 44th Annual Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Bullfrog Valley Pond from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
The event is for anglers up to age 12. Prizes will be awarded for the angler who catches the palomino, longest, and heaviest trout.
A raffle will be held at the end of the Derby for an assortment of prizes from the Hershey/Hummelstown Kiwanis Club and Bass Pro Shops.

Spring Fling Disc Golf Tournament
|
The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a disc golf tournament on Saturday, May 11 at Shank Park, Bullfrog Valley Road.
There will be a beginner and advanced beginner division for this non-sanctioned event. Entry fees are $10 per beginner player and $15 per advanced player.
A learn-to-play kick off at 9:00 a.m. will be offered. The tournament begins at 10:00 a.m.

Mulch is Available to Residents
|
The yard waste that is dropped off at the Recycling Center is ground into mulch. An unlimited amount of mulch is available to Township residents at no charge during operating hours.

Yard Waste Collection is the Week of April 22
|
An unlimited amount of wood and yard waste will be collected curbside one time per month on your regular trash day by the contracted waste hauler. The collection will occur April through October.

Hershey Figure Skating Club Presents Spring Show
|
Hershey Figure Skating Club will present a Spring Figure Skating Show on Tuesday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hersheypark Arena.
Come to see some of the best junior and adult figure skaters in the region, and those destined for future achievements!
Admission and parking are free.
Follow directions to the Arena and tell the attendant at the parking booth that you are headed for the Arena and use Entrance 4.

League of Women Voters to Hold Candidate Forum
|
The League of Women Voters Hershey Area (LWVHA) will sponsor a candidate forum on April 25, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The forum will be held at the Derry Township Municipal Building, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey.
Candidates for Derry Township Supervisor have been invited to participate. The forum is open to the public, which may participate in the question and answer session.

April is Autism Acceptance Month
Vista School to Host Community Fair
|
Vista, a nonprofit 501c3 organization that provides autism services to children and adults in Central PA, is hosting a community fair at their 18-acre Hershey campus on April 27 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for Autism Acceptance Month.
The fair will be a sensory-friendly environment with many activities for children of all ages. It will be a fun-filled day of free activities that everyone can enjoy including: bounce houses, games, face painting, arts and crafts, animals and much more. Food will be available for purchase at various food trucks. This is a free event and open to the public.

Bark for Life Event Helps Fight Against Cancer
|
Bark For Life® is an American Cancer Society Relay For Life fundraising event that honors the caregiving qualities of canine companions. The Bark for Life event includes a noncompetitive walk for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.
This year's event will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Herbert A. Schaffner Memorial Park (a.k.a. Boro Park) in Hummelstown.

Hershey Lions Club Foundation Helps the Community with Annual Golf Tournament
|
Members of the Hershey Lions Club Foundation invite you to play golf in their 30
th
Annual Henry F. Nixon Memorial Amateur Golf Tournament scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2019. The annual club event will take place at the Manada Golf Club located at 609 Golf Lane, Grantville.
The event raises funds to benefit projects of the Hershey Lions Club Foundation including eye exams and glasses; sponsorship of youth sports teams; support for the Hershey Food Bank; Hershey High Parents Club; student scholarship awards; and the student backpack program.
The cost to participate is $75 and includes 18-holes of golf, a power cart, door prizes, and a catered dinner. Format: 4-person scramble with registration from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m.; shot gun start at 1:00 p.m.
