Cocoa Castle Closes Temporarily
The Cocoa Castle Playground will be temporarily closed due to construction starting on May 3rd. The closure is expected to last several weeks. Please check for updates on the Derry Township Parks & Recreation Facebook page and at
DTPD & Penn State Health To Participate in DEA National Drug Take-back Day
Derry Township Police will partner with Penn State Health to host a drive-through/drop-off Drug Take Back location at 90 Hope Drive, Hershey, PA 17033 (Academic Support Building) on Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 10 am to 2 pm. On National Drug Take-Back Day in October 2020, 492.7 Tons of prescription medications were collected in the United States. To date, National Drug Take Back day has collected over 6,842.2 Tons of unused, expired, and unwanted prescription medications that may have otherwise gotten into the wrong hands.
Rain Barrel Workshop Provides a Free Rain Barrel
Rain barrels collect roof runoff and store the water for future use providing many environmental benefits. Rain barrels are inexpensive to install and maintain.
Dauphin County Conservation District in partnership with Derry Township Municipal Authority is hosting a virtual rain barrel workshop. The workshop will be held online, Tuesday, May 4th at 6:00 PM. Workshop participants can pick up their rain barrel at the Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA), located at 670 Clearwater Road, Hershey, the following day. Rain barrels will be provided for curbside pickup. The workshop is open to all Derry Township residents who are interested in installing a rain barrel, but will be limited to the first 50 who register. There is no cost to attend the workshop. Workshop participants will receive a FREE RAIN BARREL (Limit one rain barrel per household).

Please note that water collected in a rain barrel contains some pollutants and is unfit for human consumption.
Derry Township Youth Fishing Contest
The Township of Derry Department of Parks & Recreation will be holding a youth fishing contest at Bullfrog Valley Pond. This contest is open to anglers ages 12 and under. Registration is not required.
The pond will be stocked with trout sometime during the week of April 26th (the exact day is weather dependent).

The stocking announcement will be made on the Derry Township Parks & Recreation Facebook page and on the Parks & Recreation page at
After the stocking announcement is posted, anglers ages 12 and under will have 7 days to attempt to catch the largest trout.

Anglers of other ages may fish during this time, but they are not eligible for the contest.
In order to compete, anglers will need to submit a photo of their catch at the official measuring station at Bullfrog Valley Pond (near the gazebo).

The photo will need to clearly show the measurements of the trout and be emailed to along with the child’s name, age, address, and phone number.
A grand prize will be awarded to the top angler!

Public Works Seeks Seasonal Laborers
The Township of Derry Public Works Department has immediate openings for Seasonal Laborers. Work will consist of grounds and parks maintenance, leaf collection, and winter snow removal. Starting wage is $14.74 per hour. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a current valid PA Driver’s license.

History of Blues in America: Kids' Edition
Saturday, April 24 - 10:00 am to 11:00 a.m.

Young people will find the History of the Blues in America show to be fun and informative, as Joey Leone connects the history and style of early blues musicians and their unique word imagery to the vernacular of hip-hop, top 40, and spoken word artists of today. The content of these different styles of music was and is still a way for people to connect with their audience while having fun. The Q&A afterwards is always energetic and full of positive energy. Kids leave with a better understanding of the origins of where their favorite music comes from, and often results in a newfound interest to learn to play a musical instrument. Join Ms. Rita Storytime on Facebook Live for Families with pre-walking babies (birth-12 months). Share songs, simple stories, nursery rhymes, and action plays through the magic of Facebook Live. Each program lasts 15-20 minutes. The live recording will be available for a week.

Join Ms. Rita on Facebook Live for virtual story time perfect for your preschooler. While the live video will happen Thursday morning at 10:00, the video will be available on the library's Facebook page week for a week.
Fused Glass Class
Saturday, May 1 - 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Please register for an outside program. Join Kathleen Forney, Fused Glass Artist, to make one of two projects. The first option is a fused glass patchwork plate. You will choose the colors and cut the glass. The second option is a butterfly or dragonfly mosaic piece that can be displayed on a wall or tabletop. Each project costs $45. The program is suitable for teens and adults.
SPLAT Studio--Mother's Day Collage
Sunday, May 2 - 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

It’s a Hershey Public Library tradition – a surprise Mother’s Day art project. Back by popular demand, Meghan Winslow of SPLAT Studio – Spirited People Learning Artfulness Together – will help the children design a special project for a loved one. Please register by age group for this Friends virtual program.

Hershey Artfest
We missed you in 2020 but we’re ready for 2021!

The Hershey History Center is pleased to announce Hershey Artfest will return on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at the Cocoa Beanery and Englewood Barn complex in Hershey, PA.

Mark your calendar to participate and help us celebrate fine art, artisans, music and food on Mother’s Day Weekend, nestled among the green spaces of the kid and pet-friendly Cocoa Beanery and the new entertainment venue and brewery, Englewood Barn.

This is the same event you have grown to love, kicking off the spring art festival season!

Guests will experience a variety of fine art and guild craftwork for both the serious and casual collector, represented by as many as 150 artists and artisans.

Derry Township Community Cats Clinic
Derry Township Community Cats offers township residents assistance with trapping outdoor free-roaming cats to have them spayed/neutered and vaccinated for free. The next clinic is May 11th. reservations can be made by calling the "cat line" at 717-592-8087.

Residents may also obtain low cost spay/neuters and vaccinations for owned cats by calling the same number. Please note that cats must be at least six months old. For more information visit
Hershey Area Playhouse Presents December Songs
The Hershey Area Playhouse is presenting December Songs, featuring soprano Sarah Zahn and pianist Andy Roberts. The online performances will be held on April 23, 24 and 25 at 7 p.m.

Miles for Matthew Pritchett
Matthew may have died, but it's equally important that he lived. We remember his compassion and satisfaction he felt from giving of himself and helping others. We celebrate his life, and want to keep him a part of something permanent. We believe we are all responsible for the well being of our community and feel this annual Remembrance Walk keeps Matthew connected to all of us.

Raise a Glass and Take a Virtual Trip with The Hershey Symphony Orchestra
Join the Hershey Symphony Orchestra on May 23, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a virtual trip to Austria, Italy, France, and the United States to enjoy wine and cheese pairings with Sommelier Carrie Elliott. At each stop, Hershey Symphony Music Director Dr. Sandra Dackow will share the musical impact that these countries’ composers have made. Participants will enjoy musical samples by composers from each country performed by members of the Hershey Symphony Orchestra. 
Participants will pick up their special wine and cheese boxes in Hershey the day of the event. Instructions for pick up and a link to access the event will be sent after registration. The cost is $75 per wine and cheese box with all proceeds benefitting The Hershey Symphony Orchestra. Reservations are limited and may be made on the Symphony website.
Hershey Area Playhouse Offers Summer Camps for Students in Grades 1 to 12
Hershey Area Playhouse is pleased to offer several summer camps for students in grades 1 to 12. The June Performance Camp will run from Monday to Friday at the Playhouse, from June 14 to 25 with evening performance on June 25. The Gardens Summer Theatre Camp will run Monday to Friday at the Hershey Gardens and the Playhouse from July 12 to 23 with a performance on Friday, July 23 at noon.

Registration information can be found at the Playhouse website in the Theatre Academy section. The appropriate age group is based on the grade the student will be going into in the fall. Cut off for registration is May 21 or when the classes are filled.

Cocoa Packs is excited to announce that they will once again be a distribution site for round 5 of the USDA Food Boxes. Those in need may stop by our drive thru on Mondays & Wednesdays anytime from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Spring Creek Church 335 East Areba Ave in Hershey through April 28th. Pollinator and Water Conservation Planting Volunteer Opportunity
The Derry Environmental Action Committee or DEAC and the Hershey Trust are working together for the sixth season to continue developing the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Conservation Area along Cocoa Avenue in Hershey. If you would like to take responsibility for preparing, planting, weeding and watering a plot of native plants at the area for this coming season, please call either Chuck Gassert at 717-566-5058 or Carol Gisselquist at 717-533-2364. Or if you just want to volunteer to help for one work day, please join us on Saturday, May 1 from 9 to noon by registering at Penn State Extension: or call 877-345-0691. Due to COVID restrictions and social distancing requirements, only 60 people will be allowed to participate. Please register as soon as possible to ensure your place at the event.
