The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect from Asia currently found in southeastern Pennsylvania, and sightings have been reported in some neighboring states. For more information about this pest and how to Identify, Destroy, and Report please read this flyer on the subject.

Dauphin County CARES Funding for Businesses and Non-profits Opens Today
Dauphin County CARES COVID Recovery Small Business and Nonprofit Interruption Assistance Programs opens today and will remain open until Monday, September 14 at 4:30 p.m. Businesses and nonprofits can apply at www.dauphincounty.org/cares
Don’t Forget to Complete the Census
If you haven’t had time to fill out the 2020 Census, please do so soon. The census results help determine how federal funding flows into states and communities each year and determines how many seats in Congress each state gets. Your responses matter and it just take a few minutes! Here’s the link https://2020census.gov/ or if you prefer, stop by the Hershey Public Library to pick up a printed copy of the census that you can mail back. Thank you!
Public Feedback Period Extended for Greater Hershey Regional Transportation Study
Deadline for Comments is 9/8/20

In response to an outpouring of constructive public comment from concerned citizens regarding the Greater Hershey Regional Transportation Study, Derry Township is extending the period for feedback for an additional thirty days. Residents now have until Tuesday, September 8, 2020 to submit questions, comments or recommendations.

Any comments or questions on the report, recommendations, maps or exhibits should be directed to Alyx Gallagher, HRG, via email at agallagher@hrg-inc.com. Upon receipt of comments, HRG will evaluate them, update the plan as required, and distribute a final report by the end of September.

Utilities
Construction Update for PPL Duct Bank Project
PPL has been working on Elm Avenue and Sand Hill Road. For the remaining work north of Cherry Drive on Sand Hill Road, PPL will need to close Sand Hill Road 24/7 for safety reasons. Drive-In Movie at Shank Park Tonight!
The Parks & Recreation Department will be holding its final Drive-In Movie of the summer at Shank Park tonight. Bring the whole family to enjoy a great movie in the park, featuring "The Kid Who Would Be King." Admission is absolutely free and concessions will be available for purchase. Market on Chocolate
Market on Chocolate runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Saturday and features many new and returning vendors selling a multitude of goods ranging from locally grown to prepared foods and from unique jewelry to artisan wares. Plus, join us at 9:00 a.m. for a free, socially distanced body weight fitness class with LB Fitness or come for Yoga with Tribe Fitness at 10:00 a.m. followed by live music from Dave McCullough.

Labor Day Weekend
The Hershey Public Library is closed on Monday, September 7 and will re-open to resume normal services at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8. Expanded Saturday hours begin on September 12 when the library will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Watercolor Magic Tuesdays
September 8, 15 & 29 - 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Watercolor Magic is a virtual art class on Zoom with Marie Gamon from the Hershey Area Art Association. Explore the magic of watercolor, where the paint, the water and paper join your efforts to produce fun, lively expressions of art. With each class, explore techniques that will allow you to take advantage of what your paper, paint, and water do as well as develop your skills in handling this simple and complex medium. An Introduction to Publishing Your Writing is a virtual class on Google Meet (similar platform to Zoom) on Sunday, September 13 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. with instructor, Laura English. We will discuss reasons to publish and answer some preliminary questions about the process of submitting creative work: How do I find markets? What are submissions fees used for and how much should I be willing to pay? What’s expected in a cover letter? What should I write in my author’s bio? We’ll also talk about simultaneous submissions, writers’ guidelines, and ways to increase your acceptance rate. Class fee is $15. Please register and pay online on Eventbrite.com
Arabiqa! Drums and Dances from Around the World
September 13 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Via Zoom, come travel to the Arab world with Karim Nagi! With humor, acrobatics, and masterful audience incorporation, Karim introduces us to the wonders of Arab culture. Hear musical instruments such as the Duff, Riqq, Buzuq, Sagat, Mijwiz, and Tabla, and learn about their history. Learn how to wrap a kufiyya headpiece, and then watch – and even dance – some folk dances! You won’t want to miss this uplifting and energetic show! As an Arab-American, Karim bridges the East-West cultural gap in the most profound yet entertaining way. Online registration is required for this Friends Children’s Program. Finance in Covid Times

This is a virtual class on Zoom. Please join Michael J. Open Mic in the R.G. (Reading Garden)
The Hershey Public Library is looking for young musicians to entertain in the library's R.G. (Reading Garden) on October 9th and 23rd starting at 7:00 p.m. If you sing, play an instrument, or write poetry come share your talents. This is a family friendly event and performed material should reflect that fact. If you have questions or would like to participate please contact either Rita Smith or Aly Tran at the Hershey Public Library. Everyone in attendance, please practice social distancing and wear a mask. We will provide a microphone, a speaker and power. Performers will need to bring anything else they require to perform.

For the October 9th date, performers need to register by September 29th. 

For the October 23rd date, performers need to register by October 13th.

Community News and Events
Derry Township Community Cats Clinic
Derry Township residents can sign up to get help with trapping outdoor, free-roaming cats and having them spayed/neutered and vaccinated for free. The next clinic is September 8; reservations can be made by calling 717-592-8087. 

You can also schedule a low-cost spay/neuter and vaccinations for owned cats by calling the same number. Please note that cats must be six months old.

Race Relations in Hershey – Virtual Meeting
Hershey Area All Things Diversity invites the community to its next free session, “Race Relations in Hershey,” September 23, 2020 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The session will be held via Zoom and streamed live on the Derry Township YouTube page. 
The program will feature Dr. Samuel Richards, an award-winning teaching professor and sociologist at Penn State University who instructs the largest race and cultural relations course in the United States.
