Board Makes Appointments for 2019
The reorganization meeting of the Township of Derry Board of Supervisors was held on Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Derry Township Municipal Building.
Supervisor Susan Cort was named chairwoman, Justin Engle will be the vice-chairman and Supervisor Richard Zmuda will serve as the secretary.

The Supervisors made the following advisory board appointments:
  • Re-appointed Christine Taylor Brann to the Vacancy Board for a one-year term.
  • Re-appointed Tom Wilson to the Planning Commission for a four-year term.
  • Re-appointed Don Santostefano and Daniel Lauria to the Uniform Construction Code Board for five-year terms.
  • Appointed Mike Corado to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for a five-year term.
  • Re-appointed Leigh-Anne Dornberger and appointed Jordan Yeagley to the Board of Library Directors for three-year terms.
  • Appointed Lindsay Drew to the Zoning Hearing Board for a five-year term.
  • Appointed Matthew Luttrell to the Downtown Core Design Board for a three-year term.
  • Re-appointed Louis Verdelli to the Police Pension Advisory Board for a one-year term.
  • Appointed Elizabeth Claypoole to the General Authority for a two-year term.
  • Re-appointed Michael Postick and Charles Duncan to the Municipal Authority for five-year terms.
  • Appointed Linda Eyer to the Tax Collection Association for a three-year term.

The Board is grateful to all residents who expressed an interest in serving on an advisory board. Many times, the incumbent member wishes to serve another term, and there are not enough positions for all the new applicants.
Various other volunteer opportunities with the Township will be presented for their consideration.
Informational Meeting to Be Held About Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 School Year
D erry Township School District will be holding an informational meeting for parents/guardians of children who will be five years old before September 1, 2019 and plan to attend kindergarten in DTSD this coming fall. 

The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on January 23 in the Large Group Instruction Room at the Hershey Early Childhood Center, 450 Rear Homestead Road, Hershey. 
Topics to be covered include an overview of our exceptional full-day kindergarten program, the school enrollment process, district food services, and student transportation. 

Registration for the meeting is not required to attend, nor do prospective students need to be present at the meeting.
Derry Township Encourages Residents to Participate in Recyclebank
The Township offers residents an incentive-based recycling rewards program through Recyclebank. Residents that sign up for the program are rewarded for their curbside recycling efforts and for learning how to live more sustainable lifestyles.

The program is designed to help to improve a community’s recycling efforts through awareness and rewards. Recyclebank provides great resources to residents.
Residents accumulate points for their curbside recycling efforts and by reading short articles on the Recyclebank website.

Residents can use points for discounts at area businesses as well as many regional and national businesses, and for magazines and products.

Township Meetings and Events Calendar 

Township offices and the Recycling Center will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 21.
Christmas Tree Collection
The Public Works Department will collect Christmas trees through January 18. Trees should be placed where your trash is collected.
Come to the Library for a Family Play Day
Second Saturday will be held on January 12, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Enjoy Saturday afternoon stories and activities with your family. 
Learn How to Paint This Snowman Picture
A Snowman Canvas Painting Class will be offered on Sunday, January 13, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Join us for a step-by-step lesson on how to use acrylic paint to create this endearing snowman gazing at the starlit night sky. No art experience is needed. All supplies for this 16" x 20" painting are included in the registration fee. This class is open to adults and teens 13 and older accompanied by an adult. The fee is $35 per painter. Please register in person at the library.
January's In the Middle: Writing Theme is Music
In the Middle: Writing will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

In the Middle is for teens in 6th grade and up. This month's theme is music. Write song lyrics or poetry. Or just write a story about what your life would be like if you were a famous musician. 
Drop-In Card Making Class
Wendy Diem will present a class on Thursday, January 17, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Meet new friends and enjoy making two handcrafted seasonal cards. Different stamping techniques with Stampin' Up! Products will be demonstrated. These classes are designed for adults, and children 13 and older with an adult companion. The class fee is $6.

Community News and Events
Hershey Community Chorus to Hold Open House
The Hershey Community Chorus will host an open house on Monday, January 14, 2019, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Community Room on the lower level of The Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society Building located at 40 Northeast Drive, Hershey. All are welcome. This is an opportunity for interested members of the public to learn more about the Chorus and to meet some of the current members. Light refreshments will be served. 

The Hershey Community Chorus has been entertaining Hershey and the surrounding communities for over 85 years, since 1934. Each year the Chorus presents two major concerts, one for Christmas and the other in the spring in addition to other appearances in Hershey and the surrounding communities. Hershey Community Chorus archive files and recordings of previous concerts will be on display.

Registration for membership in the Chorus will be available and new members in all voice parts are extremely welcome. The Chorus rehearses on Monday evenings from 7:00 until 9:15 p.m. in the auditorium of The Hershey Free Church located at 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown.

Registration will continue Monday, January 21 at 6:30 p.m. with a full rehearsal starting at 7:00 p.m. Interested persons will be able to “test drive” the Chorus during this rehearsal before joining. Registration for membership is a non-refundable $30.00 which helps cover the cost of music and other expenses.

The Chorus is truly a community organization. No auditions are required to become a member, just a desire to sing. RSVP to 508-4400 or email .
Hershey Area Playhouse Presents Dearly Departed
In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpin’s other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.

Performances will be held:
February 7 - February 9 at 7:30 p.m.
February 10 at 2:00 p.m.
February 14 - February 16 at 7:30 p.m.
February 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Hershey Camera Club Offers Free Painting Workshop
Hershey Camera Club will be holding a hands-on light painting workshop at the Hershey Public Library, located at 701 Cocoa Avenue. This workshop will be held on Saturday, January 26. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

If you have a digital camera, DSLR, Point and Shoot or even an iPhone/iPad, remote shutter release, or tripod, bring it with you.

We will have extra tripods if needed. Most cameras have what is called "long exposure setting" or BULB setting. If this is the case with your camera, or iPhone/iPad stop in and find out how we will be creating unique art. Even if your iPhone/iPad does not do "long exposure" stop in and we will show you, using a special app how this may be done. It is a lot of fun and we will show you how you can create your own unique photos at home.
