2021 Community Health Needs Assessment
Community Member Survey

Penn State Health wants to understand and address the health needs of the communities we serve. We need your input so we can develop community programs to help you.
You may be facing additional issues during COVID-19 but we hope you will complete this survey based on your overall health needs.

Board Makes Appointments for 2021
|
The reorganization meeting of the Township of Derry Board of Supervisors was held virtually on Monday, January 4, 2021. Supervisor Chris Abruzzo was named chairman, Natalie Nutt will be the vice-chairwoman and Supervisor Carter Wyckoff will serve as the secretary.
The Supervisors made the following advisory board appointments:
- Re-appointment – George Achorn to the Downtown Core Design Board for a five-year term.
- Re-appointment – Elizabeth Claypoole to the General Authority for a three-year term.
- Re-appointment – William Ecenbarger and Susan Kreider to the Board of Library Directors for three-year terms.
- Appointment – John Canavan to the Municipal Authority for a five-year term.
- Reappointment – Glen Rowe and Matt Tunnell to the Planning Commission for four-year terms.
- Reappointment – Lou Verdelli to the Police Pension Advisory Board for a one-year term.
- Reappointment – Sandra May to the Shade Tree Commission for a one-year term.
- Reappointment – Kelly Fedeli to the Vacancy Board for a one-year term.
- Reappointment – Michael Angello to the Zoning Hearing Board for a five-year term
Terms Ended:
- Municipal Authority – Matthew Weir
The Board is grateful to all residents who expressed an interest in serving on an advisory board. Various other volunteer opportunities with the Township will be presented to the public as they become available.

Township Meetings and Events Calendars

This is a series of virtual information health workshops made possible by a grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and presented online by Librarians from Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. If you need a laptop and/or hotspot to participate in this program you can check them out at the library by calling Aly Tran at 717-533-6555 or send an e-mail to atran@derrytownship.org. Please register for the program prior to requesting the laptop and/or hotspot.
Register for MedlinePlus for Online Health Information on Saturday, January 23. 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. In this workshop, participants will learn what type of health information is available in MedlinePlus, and how to navigate it to find the information that they need.
Register for Health Information in the News on Tuesday, January 26. 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This workshop will teach participants to look beyond sensational news headlines. It will teach them strategies to recognize a potentially poor study or overinflated reporting of results by a news source. You will receive a link to Zoom once your registration is confirmed.

Wednesday, January 27 - 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Budding architects and LEGO fanatics ages 6+ are welcome to join LEGO Club. A Zoom link will be provided along with the week's challenge via email prior to the club meeting. We will share related stories and videos and participants will have the opportunity to share the creations they made to meet the week's challenge. Please register online. You will receive a link to Zoom once your registration is confirmed.

Join the Winter Workout Flurry for some fun and exercise! For three Saturdays in a row at 10 a.m. we will host three different workouts:
- La Blast (dancing aerobics class)
- Yoga
- Championship Mindset Bingo
The dates are January 23, 30, and February 6. Sign up as an individual for $15 or as a team for $30! Teams consist of four spots and can include either family or friends, your choice! Participants who come to all three workouts have the chance to win prizes!

Hershey Figure Skating Club's Olympic Games Summer Camp!
|
Each full day includes at least 2 hours of on-ice instruction, games, crafts, instructed off-ice exercises, snacks, & a special adventure every afternoon!
No skating experience required - we'll teach your child how to ice skate, figure skate, or hockey skate!
Two weeks available: July 12-16 and July 24-30. Full day and half day camp options.

Pennsylvania Master Naturalist program opens registration
|
A Pennsylvania Master Naturalist is an individual with a passion for the natural world who participates in an intensive training program and uses his or her knowledge by giving back to the community through volunteer service. This year-round program has three components: an initial volunteer training course, volunteer service hours, and advanced training classes.
Spring training begins on April 1 and will run 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays through June 17. There also will be four field sessions scheduled on Saturdays. Application deadline is Feb. 1, but a discounted application fee is applied to all applications received by Jan. 15.

HERSHEY LIONS CLUB LAUNCHES ANNUAL
SIGHT & SERVICE CAMPAIGN
|
The Hershey Lions Club recently launched its annual Sight and Service Campaign. This annual campaign raises funds to help Derry Township residents and all funds raised through the effort go back to the public in the form of service projects and donations. Since its beginning, the club has collected almost $100,000 through the campaign.
Money raised through the campaign allows Lions to benefit the community, not just through financial support but also through acts of hands-on-service. Some pressing needs in the community include eye exams and glasses for needy residents, local student scholarships, sponsorship of youth sports teams, medical equipment assistance, support to the Hershey Food Bank, provide meals at the Ronald McDonald House, disaster response, Grace United Methodists’ “Ready for School” project, tree planting, and many other needs.
Donations can be made to our Foundation, which is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization and all contributions are fully tax deductible. Donations can be made payable to the Hershey Lions Club Foundation and addressed to P.O. Box 243, Hershey, PA 17033-0243.

Cocoa Packs is excited to announce that they will once again be a distribution site for round 5 of the USDA Food Boxes. Those in need may stop by our drive thru on Monday’s & Wednesday’s anytime from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. at 500 Homestead Rd in Hershey beginning February 1st through April 28th.

First United Methodist Church invites you to love your neighbors by donating items at their “Pop-Up Community Drive” on Saturday, January 30th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made at 64 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey, PA 17033 - First UMC upper parking lot with drive-through donations drop-off via alley (rear of church).
Pop-Up Community Drive Collections:

Hershey Food Bank: Collection of non-perishable food items: tuna, canned meats, baked beans, canned peas, peanut butter, canned pasta sauce (no glass jars, please), laundry detergent, bars of soap, toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizing wipes.

Bethesda Mission: Collection of items for the homeless: blankets, warm socks, winter gloves, winter clothes, deodorant and other toiletries.
