PA American Water to Replace Water Main Along 322
Pennsylvania American Water Company will replace approximately 8,000 LF of water main along SR 0322. Work is scheduled to begin the week of July 22, weather permitting. Restoration is planned for fall of this year.

The project runs along SR 0322, beginning at Lucy Avenue, heading west to Hockersville Road.
Due to traffic and safety concerns, this work will be done at night between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Electronic signboards will be used in addition to flaggers and a traffic control zone setup for construction.
Conditional Use Hearing Scheduled
A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Derry Township Municipal Building, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey.

The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comment regarding Conditional Use Application No. 2019-04, as filed by Kimberly Reeder and Kristyne Wagner regarding Living Legacy Church located at 228 McCorkle Road, Hershey, in the Conservation Zoning District. The petitioners request that a Conditional Use authorization be granted under the provisions of Chapter 225 (Zoning), Section 225-501.40 (Uses Similar to Specified Permitted Uses) of the Code of the Township of Derry to use the Church facilities for the establishment of a homeschool cooperative for learning support for students in kindergarten through grade 12. The applicants contend that the proposed use is similar to a school, which is a permitted use in the Conservation Zoning District.  

The Conditional Use application and supporting information may be viewed at the Derry Township Department of Community Development, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The New and Improved Bullfrog Valley Road!
Road crews completed the line painting and signs were removed this week for the opening of Bullfrog Valley Road. Head out this weekend to Bullfrog Valley Park or Shank Park and enjoy a smooth ride.
Township Seeks Candidates for a Vacancy on the Zoning Hearing Board
The Board of Supervisors is seeking applicants for a two-and-a-half-year unexpired term on the Zoning Hearing Board.

The Zoning Hearing Board has five members and renders decisions on cases of appeals, variances, and special exceptions that arise from the administration of the Zoning Ordinance. The Board meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building.

Music on Chocolate
It's concert season and Music on Chocolate will be held at ChocolateTown Park from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturday, July 13.

Hockersville Station and Hexbelt are the featured bands. Food and beverages are available for purchase.

Market on Chocolate will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. this Saturday at ChocolateTown Square.

Watch a Movie Under the Stars in Shank Park
The July movie in Shank Park, sponsored by the Friends of Parks and Recreation, will be Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. The movie will be shown on Friday, July 12 and will begin at dusk. A concession stand will be open.

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets or watch from your car. The rain date is July 20. Shank Park is on Bullfrog Valley Road.
Hershey Public Library Hosts USCF Rated Chess Tournament
The tournament will be held on Saturday, July 13, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, and is open to chess players of all ages and skill levels.

There will be three rounds with players in quad sections based on rating and age. This will be a rated chess event requiring current United States Chess Federation (USCF) membership. Sign up for USCF at

Friends of the Hershey Public Library Summer Film Festival Present Mr. Popper's Penguin
Friends Summer Film Festival: Based on the Books will present Mr. Popper's Penguin starring Jim Carey (rated PG) on Sunday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.

Registration is not required. Friends will provide snacks while you enjoy the movie.

Bring Your Family to Second Saturday
Spend an hour enjoying activities and stories with your family at Second Saturday, July 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.

Students K-5 are Invited to ScienceTellers: Aliens
ScienceTellers: Aliens, sponsored by the Friends of the Hershey Public Library, will be presented on Tuesday, July 16 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., 701 Cocoa Avenue.

During a midnight meteor shower, something mysterious falls from the sky toward Earth — but it’s not a shooting star. Two curious kids venture into the forest to investigate and find themselves mixed up with a family of visitors from another planet! Pursued by a crazy space scientist, they must risk everything to rescue the aliens and get them back to their spaceship — before it’s too late!

Wednesday is Teen Time
It's Teen Time at the library on Wednesday, July 17 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

"Found item spacecraft!" is the theme. This program is for kids in 6th grade and higher. Please bring in items or use our "found" pieces to make the most creative spacecraft.

Hershey Area Playhouse Presents Disney's The Little Mermaid in Their 20th Anniversary Season
Hershey Area Playhouse is proud to present a highlight of its 20 th Anniversary Season, Disney’s The Little Mermaid . July 18-21 and July 25-28.

The classic tale, based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid, is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab, to restore order under the sea.

With a dynamic cast and riveting visuals, the musical comes to life in Hershey Area Playhouse, creating an immersive experience for attendees.

Experience the classic musical Disney’s The Little Mermaid, running July 18 to 21 and July 25 to 28. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday performances begin at 2:00 p.m.

"Sent by the King" VBS Offered by Hershey Presbyterian Church
Come to Hershey Presbyterian Church's Vacation Bible School, "Sent by the King," July 29 to August 1 from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. each evening at 1521 Sand Hill Road (former Lancaster Mennonite School - Hershey Campus).

Chamber Musicians to Perform at Derry Church
A lively afternoon of chamber music by talented musicians Mike Klucker, Laura Ibrahim, Megan Pfiester, Ethan Fasnacht, Dan Stokes, and more will be presented at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 3 in the Sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 East Derry Road, Hershey. The program will feature rarely performed but fiery selections by Francaix, Piazzola, and Gjeilo.

Admission is free. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available.

Mike Klucker is a member of Derry Church, a recent graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, with a Bachelor’s in Music Education. He is a recipient of the Performer’s Recognition and Creative Achievement Awards. He teaches music at Fairfax County Public Schools and maintains a private lesson studio in the Springfield area. Mike also is a freelance cellist, making appearances with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra, and other venues throughout the DMV area. As a student at Hershey High School, Mike formed a chamber orchestra that played for worship services at Derry Church.

Dan Stokes serves as Derry Church’s Interim Organist and Music Director. He is a graduate of Messiah College and Scaritt Graduate School with a Master’s in Church music and has an impressive career with many accomplishments. Dan returned to Hummelstown after serving for 26 years as Organist/ Director of Music Ministries at Christ Church United Methodist, Louisville, Kentucky.
