Derry's Longtime Township Manager Retires
James Negley has retired ending a 44-year career with Derry Township. An event was held in Jim’s honor on his last day, November 5. Friends and colleagues gathered to wish him well and to thank him for his support and leadership.

He was presented with a Derry Township Retirement Award and a proclamation naming November 5 James Negley Employee Service Day in Derry Township. Dauphin County Commissioner Michael Pries, former Derry Township Supervisor, presented Jim with a citation and Representative Thomas Mehaffie presented him with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.  A citation acknowledging his service was also presented from Senator John DiSanto from the Pennsylvania Senate.

Jim served in the Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969 which included combat service in Vietnam. He became a police officer with the Derry Township Police Department in 1974 and rose to the top-ranking position in the department in 1991 when he was promoted to chief of police.

He served as the chief until March 1996 when he became the township manager, a position he held for 22 years.

The Township is fortunate to have his leadership for so many years. His dedication, knowledge, management skills, and upbeat personality will be missed.

Public Hearing to be Held on a Conditional Use Application
The Board of Supervisors will conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, November 27, at 5:30 p.m., at the Derry Township Municipal Complex, 600 Clearwater Road.

The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comment regarding Conditional Use Application No. 2018-01, as filed by Hershey Trust Company, Trustee for Milton Hershey School. The applicant requests conditional use authorization of a Master Plan for the development of a mixed-use community on approximately 245.79 acres of land located south of U.S. Route 322, east of Waltonville Road, west of Bullfrog Valley Road, and north of Wood Road. 

The conditional use application and supporting information may be viewed at the Derry Township Department of Community Development, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
2019 Budget Hearing
A budget hearing has been scheduled to be held on Wednesday, November 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Municipal Complex, 600 Clearwater Road.

The Board of Supervisors will review the projected revenues and expenditures for 2019 and address any other business to be brought before the Board.

The final draft of the budget to be presented will be compiled the week of November 26 and will be available on the Township's website, and on display at the Municipal Complex and the Hershey Public Library on November 28. The budget is anticipated to be adopted at the December 18 Board of Supervisors meeting.
Friends of the Hershey Public Library Present Aladdin
The Popcorn Hat Players will perform Aladdin on Saturday, November 10 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.

One of the most famous tales from Arabian Nights, the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp has entertained all ages for hundreds of years. Join Aladdin and his super-powered Genie as he learns an important lesson in responsibility. Can Aladdin outwit the evil Fazeem and win the heart of the beautiful princess?
Registration is not required for this Friends sponsored family program. Everyone is welcome to attend. 
Township Meetings and Events Calendar 

Jr. Ornament Making Class Offered
Students in 4th grade and higher are invited to join Kathy Forney to make a tree or Star of David ornament to use as a decoration or give as a gift.

The class will be held on Sunday, November 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue. The cost of the class is $15. Payment can be made at the children's and teen desk--cash or check made payable to Kathleen Forney. Please note that students that register will remain on a waiting list until payment is made. Being on the waiting list does not guarantee a place in the class.
Financial Series - Understanding Social Security
The next session in the financial education series to be presented at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, is Understanding Social Security; A Retirement Income Cornerstone. Steven Ginter, Associate Vice President & Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley, will make the presentation on Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Registration is not required but it is appreciated.
What's More Special Than a Handcrafted Card
Join Wendy Makes and meet new friends while you make two handcrafted cards for $6 on Thursday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library.

Using different stamping techniques with Stampin’ Up! Products, you'll make two seasonal cards. Registration is not necessary for this drop-in program designed especially for adults, and children with an adult companion.
Friday November 16 is Play Day for Families
Families with children ages 2-6 are welcome to register for an hour of center-based free play on Friday, November 16, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.

Play Days encourages children and their adults to engage in the five practices of Early Literacy: talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. 
Sit Back, Relax, and Listen to a Story
Adult Storytime will be held on Saturday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Emily Fortney will read more of the Sherlock Holmes story, The Hound of the Baskervilles . For those of you who are new to the lot, it’s about a legend surrounding the Baskerville family. They all die of mysterious deaths. Sightings of a werewolf type dog are reported by the locals at the time of the Baskerville’s deaths. It’s a great story with a fun, supernatural element to it. This program is for an audience age 18 and older.
Library and Recycling Center Hours and Addresses
Recycling Center Hours   - 650 Clearwater Road 
The hours for the Recycling Center changed to the winter schedule on November 5. The Center will not be open on Wednesdays and Saturday's hours are 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through March 9, 2019.

Help to Support the Hershey Food Bank!
Feed the Need, a fundraiser for the Hershey food Bank and Community Outreach, will take place on Sunday, November 18, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hershey Country Club, 1000 E. Derry Road. Featured at the event will be tastings from many of Hershey Entertainment and Resorts chefs, along with local musical talent and a variety of Live and Silent auctions, including a ride to school on a Hershey Volunteer Fire Company fire truck after having breakfast a Phillip Arthur's!

Some of the culinary selections are grilled corn and eggplant crepes, root beer braised lamb shanks, and pumpkin cranberry bread pudding with brandy sauce.

Tickets are $80 per person and include a beverage from the bar. Tickets may be purchased at Email for more information.
Join the Hershey Horticulture Society for a Holiday Luncheon and Floral Demonstration
The Hershey Horticulture Society will hold its Holiday Luncheon at the Hershey Country Club, 1000 E. Derry Road, on Monday, December 3 at noon.

Pat Lawrence will present the program, Holiday Arrangement for the Home. The cost of the luncheon and program is $28. Please contact Gloria Casciotti no later than November 19 at 717-533-5275 to make a reservation.
LivingWell Institute to Hold a Christmas Open House
LivingWell is a 501c3 organization dedicated to improving the health of individuals and families who are experiencing  struggles or want to improve their health through mind, body and spirit resources.

Please join us for a Christmas Open House on Friday, December 7 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. LivingWell Institute is located at 20 Valley Road in Hershey. RSVPs are appreciated at 717-533-0881, but not required. 
"An Irish Christmas” Concert at Derry Church Showcases Choirs, Bells, Orchestra and Guest Soloists
Nearly 300 years ago, settlers from Northern Ireland founded Derry Church in what is now Central Pennsylvania. We go back to our roots to bring you “An Irish Christmas” holiday concert extravaganza that combines adult, youth and children’s choirs, handbells, orchestra and guest soloists at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 9 in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 East Derry Road, Hershey. 

The Derry Ringers will open the concert with a lively arrangement of I Saw Three Ships for seven octaves of handbells, and later perform In the Bleak Mid-Winter using a combination of choir chimes and handbells to paint a magical tone-painting of falling snow. Derry’s Sanctuary Choir and Festival Orchestra will open with a Chieftains favorite:  Past Three a Clock , arranged by John Rutter. 

The Choir will perform two exquisite traditional Irish Carols, Love Came Down at Christmas and Wexford Carol , which also features Derry's youth and children's choirs. These young voices are also highlighted in an arrangement of the Welsh cradle carol, Suo-Gan , which was featured in an epic 1987 film, Empire of the Sun. All the choirs and handbells will join together to close the first half with David Willcock's rollicking arrangement of I Saw Three Ships .

The second half of the program features selections from the Christmas portion of Handel’s  Messiah, 
which premiered in Dublin. Noted soloists will include Jennifer Groves, soprano, Marissa Chalker, mezzo-soprano, George Somerville, tenor, and Constantine Tsourakis, baritone, all under the direction of Sean McCarthy.

The concert is part of the church’s 2018-19 Arts Alive Cultural Series. A free-will offering will be received. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available.
Annual Holiday Community Sing
Farm of Hope Inc. will hold an Annual Holiday Community Sing on Saturday, December 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Hershey located at 64 West Chocolate Avenue. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

The Sing is for the Special Needs Community including individuals, families, friends, and direct care supports. All will be invited to sing along to Christmas and Hanukkah favorites led by WB Music Therapy, as well as listen to performances by instrumentalists, solo performers, and a bell choir.

The event is free and light refreshments will be provided. Please come out and support the Special Needs Community in this afternoon of fun!
