Township Schedules Shred-It Event for October 16
Derry Township invites its residents to bring personal documents that need to be shredded to its next Shred-It event, Friday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department.
 
Only sensitive documents that require shredding, including papers that contain personal information such as full social security numbers or credit card numbers, should be brought to the Shred-It event. Derry Township offers this service for residents to shred personal documents a few times a year.
 
Magazines, junk mail, telephone books, cardboard and glossy paper may be recycled by dropping them off at the Derry Township Recycling Center. You also may place newspapers and cardboard in your Waste Management Recycling Bin.

Hazard Mitigation Plan Survey
Dauphin County is updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). The HMP will analyze the hazards faced by the County and Derry Township, its residents, and businesses, and will identify a strategy for minimizing the vulnerability to these hazards. You can find out more about the HMP and the planning process here: https://www.dauphincountyhmp.com/. We encourage all residents and visitors of the County to provide input into the planning process. We have developed a short survey about the County and the risks it faces. We would greatly appreciate it if you would complete the survey and otherwise participate in this important endeavor. The survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DauphinCountyHMP. Thank you for your participation in this planning effort!
Stop This Invader!
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect from Asia currently found in southeastern Pennsylvania, and sightings have been reported in some neighboring states. For more information about this pest and how to Identify, Destroy, and Report please read this flyer on the subject.

The Derry Township Yard Waste Center is still operating under “Summer Hours” until November 02, 2020.

Summer Hours:
Monday & Wednesday- 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday & Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Winter Hours (beginning 11/2):
Monday - 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Friday - 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Saturday- 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Services
PPL Work on Governor Road
PPL has coordinated with PennDOT and Derry Township to move their work on Governor Road (Rt. 322) to nighttime hours. This shift to nighttime work will minimize the impact to daytime traffic, and maximize work efficiency, thereby decreasing the amount of time required to work on Governor Road.

Here’s the current schedule for the night work, excluding weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances:

W. Governor Rd. (SH 322) – nightly road closures from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Monday 10/5 through Friday 10/9; no closure Saturday or Sunday
  • Monday 10/12 through Friday 10/16; no closure Saturday or Sunday

Join Us at The Library
Curbside Pickup Service
Beginning on Monday, October 5, the Hershey Public library offers a Curbside Pickup service. Pickups are available Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Place a reservation on an available item (on the shelf) by calling the library at 717-533-6555 or send an email to library@derrytownship.org and schedule a date/time to pick up. There is a 10-item limit for Curbside Pickup.
Open Mic @ the R.G.
Friday, October 9 - 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Come along to the Reading Garden for some socially distant live music. We will be hanging outside and listening to some local musicians share their talent. Please bring your chairs, masks, evening snacks and a blanket if there's a chill. We will be asking everyone to sit socially distant, wear a mask, and respect everyone around them. Enjoy the music. No registration required.
Friends Pop-Up Book Sale!
Monday, October 12 to Saturday, December 5

Friends of the Hershey Public Library to Launch Pop Up Book Sales.

A new, exciting kind of book sale featuring hundreds of books, puzzles, games, DVDs and CDs all at amazing prices will be at the Hershey Public Library. The sale will operate during regular library hours in the hallway to Meeting Room 2 beginning on October 12. The Friends had to cancel its huge annual Book Sale this year because of health and safety concerns. The Pop-Up Sales will highlight different merchandise each week and follow strict protective protocols for customers and library patrons. Each of the Pop-Up Sales will continue for a week, followed by a three-for-one or five-for-one sale on the highest priced item on Saturday.

The schedule is as follows:
Oct. 12-17: puzzles and games
Oct. 19-24: regular-sized paperbacks
Oct. 26-31: hardback books and audiobooks
Nov. 2-7: children’s paperback books and board books
Nov. 9-14: cookbooks
Nov. 16-20: DVDs and CDs
Nov. 30 – Dec. 5: Holiday Extravaganza: Assortment of holiday books, CDs, DVDs, etc.

Customers can pay by cash, check, or credit card. The Friends Book Sale is the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser, which helps pay for numerous Library programs for adults and children. The Friends have also contributed to various renovation projects at the Library. Outside Pumpkin Planter Terrarium Therapy Workshop

Wednesday, October 14 - 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Join us at outside at the Hershey Public Library for a workshop fit for a fairytale, the pumpkin succulent planter! In this workshop you will learn how to create a beautiful, long-lasting pumpkin succulent planter. Your experience will include a (real) 6-7 lb. “Cinderella” or “Ghost” pumpkin, a variety of succulents, soil, preserved moss, and step-by-step instruction. Register on Eventbrite.com
Intermediate to Advanced Photoshop Class
Saturday, October 17 and Saturday, October 24

In this virtual class, Bryson Leidich will teach essential tools to achieve better image processing. Bryson will demonstrate the use of layers and masks, corrections to color, density and saturation, and stacking images for depth of field. Drive-through prescription drug take-back events planned
Penn State Health will host drive-through prescription drug take-back events at three locations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. People may drop off their unwanted, unneeded or expired medication for safe disposal at the following locations:

  • Academic Support Building, 90 Hope Drive, Hershey (on the Hershey Medical Center campus)
  • Penn State Health Medical Group—Nyes Road, 121 N. Nyes Road, Harrisburg
  • Penn State Health Medical Group—Palmyra, 941 Park Drive, Palmyra

Needles and syringes will also be accepted. The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked. The events aim to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications. These events are being held in partnership with the Derry Township, Lower Paxton Township and North Londonderry Township police departments. They’re among several nationwide coordinated by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Medications, needles and syringes cannot be accepted before 10 a.m.
Pop-Up Community Drive Collection
First United Methodist Church in Hershey invites you to drop off drive-through donations via the alley drop-off site rear of church on Saturday, October 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. The church is located at 64 West Chocolate Avenue, next to ChocolateTown Square. 
 
Just pull up and let volunteers unload your donations: 
 
Hershey Food Bank: Collection of non-perishable food items for Thanksgiving: Pumpkin 15 oz cans, Turkey or chicken stove top stuffing, Cranberry Sauce, Turkey gravy packs or jars, Pineapple (cans), Paper Towels, Pasta items
Mission Central: Blessing kits for the homeless. Items needed: new men’s socks, reusable water bottles (metal or plastic), travel size shampoos and conditioners, small notebooks (around 4"x5") with pens, Chapstick lip balm
Family Promise: Giant gift cards to help homeless families 
Derry Township Community Cats Clinic
Derry Township residents can sign up to get help with trapping outdoor, free-roaming cats and having them spayed/neutered and vaccinated for free. The next clinic is October 13; reservations can be made by calling 717-592-8087.

You can also schedule a low-cost spay/neuter and vaccinations for owned cats by calling the same number. Please note that cats must be six months old.

Join us as we kickoff our annual Preservation celebration series, La Festa Italiana, featuring the Preservation Tour on October 10th. Memories To Last A Lifetime!

Children, ages 3 to 6, and their parent or caregiver are eligible to join us for a FREE "Mommy & Me" learn to skate class, Thursday, October 15th!

This class is designed to help children and their parents become comfortable in their skates and on the ice as well as to stand independently! Our fun & friendly coaching staff will assist you and your child to achieve these goals and can provide on-ice trainers so you are not "breaking your back" while holding your child up! Adults, we'll teach you how to skate too! However, if you simply prefer to watch, you are welcome to join us from the side and we will include you in on all off-ice activities! At the end of class, you and your child will receive a small token to commemorate your special memory together!

Patriots Motorcycle Ride
Join us on Saturday, October 17, 2020 for an 85 mile fall foliage tour!

Staging is from 9-11am with departure at 11am from the PA State Police Museum (across from the Tanger Outlets).

$20 registration fee includes the ride, a light breakfast, and a free tour of the Museum.

This ride is sponsored by the PA State Police Museum and organized by the Blue Knights PA-V Chapter.
