Neurodiversity and the Workplace
by Lisa Tullai
According to Preeti Dalvie, Senior Design Research Analyst with Flad, “The awareness of neurodiversity has surged over the past few years as more people recognize the importance of accessible design.” Neurodiversity is defined as the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits. The concept promotes understanding and respecting the range of differences in individual brain function as part of normal variations in the human population and promotes acceptance for all neurological profiles, including both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals.
In Dalvie’s blog on the topic for Build Design + Construction (2025, November 21; The Impact of Neurodiversity on Workplace Evolution) he states “Data points to an increasing desire for a variety of space types [in the workplace] that are responsive to the varying needs of the mind and body [of employees] throughout the day...good design supports the health and well-being of all people while taking into consideration the physical, mental, and emotional effects on building occupants and the surrounding community… Numerous factors contribute to good design, including light, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, mental and social well-being, acoustics, movement, and nourishment; which should all be considered for optimal human-centered design.”
