Detective Comics #31 CGC 5.0

The  Classic cover  that Every Golden Age Batman
Collector Wants In Their Collection

Many collectors consider this  Detective Comics  issue second to only #27 as the most desirable issue in this historic run. Published 50 years prior to Frank Miller's reinvention of the Dark Knight, this 1939 issue truly separates the Batman from your average upbeat superhero. The CGC 5.0 Universal example in our upc oming auction is the single highest graded that we have ever brought to auction at ComicLink!  This is a very strong looking 5.0 with great colors and largely unblemished cover images which far rivals the visual appeal of the few others we have seen surface in this grade, which have large stains and/or marks on the front cover. It's one of the absolute nicest that a collector can hope to acquire. So very few have reached 5.0 or better compared to the incredible collector demand for this all-time classic DC. Only 4 other examples have been graded at 5.0 by CGC, and a mere handful have certified higher: 1 at 5.5, 3 at 6.0, and single examples at 6.5, 7.0 and 8.0, respectively. In a nutshell, then, what we're looking at here is one of the Top 12 certified examples among the small overall population of 87 that have surfaced and submitted to CGC for grading. An opportunity like this comes along only on rare occasions -- the chance to own what is really one of the most coveted books in the  entire hobby  in an attractive, unrestored grade that even most advanced collectors can only dream about ownin g.

Detective Comics  debuted more than a year before  Ac tion Comics . It was so significant to the industry that the title lent its name to the publisher - "DC". The early issues were a spawning-ground for much of the high adventu re, fast action fiction that would later result in the superhero genre with the introduction of Superman. Shortly thereafter, within  Detective Comics #27 , this title introduced Batman. The world of comics would never be the same.  Detective Comics  is clearly one of the most important runs in all of comicdom.

Of every character within DC's stable of heroes, Batman's popularity throughout the generations is the most enduring. Bruce Wayne is endowed not with super powers, but with a unique determination that drives him towards superior effort and superior insight, enabling Batman to do superhuman things. That he is universally relatable to us all as human beings is why the character has remained a cultural icon for so long. Batman has been one of the most widely appreciated superhero characters throughout the world for over 60 years now, and has been featured in countless comic books, numerous movies, his own TV show, video games and more T-shirts than we can imagine. Batman has appeared more often on the silver screen than any other superhero and his most recent incarnation in Christopher Nolan's mega-blockbusters has made the character more popular than ever. It is likely that Batman will continue to be a favorite of hobbyists, moviegoers, and children all around the world for centuries to come!
