How to Choose Lamp Post Heights
Whether for city streets or residential communities, adding lamp posts can improve curb appeal and safety. There are a wide variety of styles and sizes of light poles available in the market. When selecting the lamp posts for lighting projects, there are many things to consider: material, size, fixture type, and maintenance, to name a few. TerraCast® offers a reliable solution to your project needs! Our PolySteel™ lamp posts are the perfect option for those with a limited budget. When other materials fail after three years, TerraCast® PolySteel™ posts last over twenty years with very little maintenance required.
How to Select Pole Heights for Your Project
You may determine the appropriate height of the lamp posts based on the lighting requirements like the type of area, street, fixtures, etc. The light pole should provide adequate lighting without polluting the sky.
The height of the light pole directly affects the quality of illumination, which is why it is imperative to select carefully. Generally, the pole height should be taller as the distance between them gets farther if installing more than one light pole. However, it depends on many factors, such as the width of the road and lamp capacity.

Typical heights for streetlights can vary anywhere from 8' to 50' tall. In residential areas, pole heights can be anywhere from 8' to 14' tall. Shorter lamp posts like 7' or 9' Washington or New England style posts are ideal for small spaces like gardens and driveways, while taller posts like 12' and 16' Washington and Madison Posts are more suited for lighting larger areas like pathways and parking areas.
Select Luminaries
In general, the size of post-top lights should be about a quarter of the pole height. For example, with our 9 feet tall PolySteel™ post, we recommend a luminaire about 26 inches tall, such as Woodside HillsNeptune, or 26" Victorian Globe. We have various style luminaries and street lamps, and the dark sky option is also available upon request.
