USPS Shipping Equity Act Reintroduced in Congress
In May, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced the USPS Shipping Equity Act (H.R. 3721) alongside Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) and eight original House co-sponsors. This legislation would end the Prohibition-era ban that prevents the United States Postal Service (USPS) from shipping alcoholic beverages to consumers and allow them to ship directly from licensed producers and retailers to consumers over the age of 21, in accordance with state and local laws at the delivery location. Bruce Tyler of Weldon Mills Distillery
|
Our latest guest on The Craft Spirits Podcast is Bruce Tyler, the co-founder of Weldon Mills Distillery in Weldon, North Carolina. Tyler is a former active duty member of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps who opened the distillery with his friend and business partner Michael Hinderliter at the start of the pandemic in 2020. One year later, the distillery’s corn whiskey, Rockfish, claimed best in show at the Heartland Whiskey Competition.
In this episode, Tyler—who is also the vice president of the North Carolina Distillers Association—discusses the surprise of that Heartland honor; the distillery’s bourbon and other products; a second location in Durham; plans for a bed & breakfast near the distillery; an upcoming North Carolina bourbon and spirits festival; and more.

Coconut Rum Daiquiri & Aguachile Pairing
Jordan Cotton of Cotton & Reed in Washington, D.C., offered this pairing, based on a previous collaboration with D.C.-based chef Christian Irabien. Cotton says that the "notes of coconut and the unctuous coconut oil texture of our rum provide a soft balance" to the sharp spice of the aguachile—a shrimp-based Mexican dish similar to ceviche, but with a spicier kick.
"We make our Coconut Rum with just three ingredients—unaged rum, dried organic coconut flakes and sugar," Cotton notes. "The cocktail recipe is similarly straightforward."
Coconut Rum Daiquiri Recipe
2 oz. Cotton & Reed Coconut Rum
1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
3/4 oz. Simple Syrup
Combine all ingredients in shaker with ice. Shake. Double strain into a coupe.
One of Irabien's signature aguachile recipes can be found here.

Driftless Glen Distillery in Baraboo, Wisconsin, has a full restaurant and the Brandy Glazed Salmon has been a staple item on the menu for years. It features the distillery's 5 Year Reserve Brandy, which is aged in their own used bourbon barrels, making for a unique twist.
Also at Driftless Glen, Pasta alla Vodka is a newer dish on the menu. It features the distillery's Premium Vodka in a cream sauce, and, when combined with their house-made Italian meatballs, rigatoni pasta, vine-ripened tomatoes, basil and fresh parmesan cheese, is an unforgettable entrée.
Pre-Order 'The ACSA Guide to Starting and Operating a Distillery' E-Book

The American Craft Spirits Association is the only national registered nonprofit trade association representing the U.S. craft spirits industry. Its mission is to elevate and advocate for the community of craft spirits producers, and membership in ACSA is open to anyone.
ACSA is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the eligible voting members of the Association. Voting members must be independent licensed distillers (DSPs) annually removing fewer than 750,000 proof gallons from bond (the amount on which a Federal Excise Tax is paid.)
