Devastating Impact of Typhoon Yagi:

A Call for Faith and Community Support

Greetings Ministry Partners,

Typhoon Yagi recently struck the northern provinces of Vietnam, causing devastating damage far beyond initial predictions. It unleashed heavy rains and landslides, obliterating a village overnight that is predominantly home to Christians. Many bodies remain unrecovered. According to government reports, the damage from Typhoon Yagi amounts to 81,500 billion VND, with 344 people dead or missing, 5.6 million poultry lost, hundreds of thousands of homes damaged, and hundreds of thousands of hectares of rice and crops destroyed.

Many Christians are facing significant challenges to their faith and understanding of God. As a Christian educational organization, our response has been insufficient, and church education has not adequately addressed the reality that natural disasters are part of the world God created, and their occurrence does not reflect a lack of divine love or power of God. We have reached out to comfort God’s people, reminding them that challenges can be opportunities for their faith to grow stronger. We emphasize that God is always present and provides comfort in every circumstance.

A specific action we can take is to encourage community spirit. We remind God’s people to love and share with their communities during these difficult times. Furthermore, we encourage Christians to participate in relief efforts and assist those affected. The CCI Vietnam team is small, but we see that Christian education plays a crucial role in helping the church not only understand natural disasters better but also strengthen faith and community spirit in all circumstances.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Typhoon Yagi Relief Work

CCI Hmong Coordinator in the north and his wife reported their aid post-typhoon. They volunteered to go to one of the most damaged villages in the province. From September 24-29, their group went to provide aid. Thanks to funding from some local Christian organizations and Christians, the volunteer group supported the affected families with necessities, including rice, rice cookers, mosquito nets, mats, washing powder, mats, soap, shampoo, bowls, etc. The total number of families helped was 133 households, including Dao and Hmong ethnic groups.

Testimonies

From a CCI Students

"Before I studied the course on Bible Study Methods and Interpretation rules (Book 1), I always approached the Bible based on my own thoughts. When I read a passage or a chapter, I would think I could apply it according to my understanding, and I always did that. However, after taking this course, I realized that I had been applying it incorrectly because I did not understand the context of the text. Every passage has its purpose, and we must study it based on the intentions of the authors and the original recipients. I understood that I should not apply it immediately without understanding the purpose of the text. I need to follow steps such as observation, interpretation, and application. In the past, I often jumped straight to application and overlooked the observation and interpretation steps because I was unaware of those two stages."

"As a pastor, I am aware of my responsibilities towards my congregation. This course has clarified many duties and responsibilities that I realize I cannot fulfill on my own without the grace of and faith in God. Prioritizing family for care and teaching is a valuable lesson. I have often been taught that one must sacrifice, including sacrificing one’s family for the church, in order to be an effective pastor. I have changed my mindset to understand that I must care for and fulfill my responsibilities as a husband and father in order to properly fulfill my duties as a pastor."

Testimony from Love and Biblical Seminar

"Guidelines for prayer to find a partner and rules for seeking a godly spouse are new concepts for me. To have a godly partner, one must first be a godly person. To find an ideal partner, one must be an ideal person. I thank the pastors for developing a good seminar and taking time to teach us so we can grow and prepare better for our future."
