Developing New
Frontline Leaders
|
I love Autumn and the "back to school" impulse that gets everyone moving again. My older daughter just started her first year as a freshman at Washington State University, while my younger daughter began her senior year of high school. This year we have the joy and privilege of hosting an exchange student from Brazil who starts her classes this week. Lately our lives have been dominated by registering for courses, buying school supplies, figuring out transportation, and purchasing the right clothing. As their parental units, we want them to succeed.
Is that "back to school" spirit infusing your workplace? This might be a great time to evaluate the development of your organization's emerging leaders. Most new supervisors report that they receive little to no training before stepping into their first management roles. Looking back, they regret that they learned how to manage through trial and error. When you think about that "sink or swim" approach to the managers who likely lead 80% of your workforce, that seems foolish, particularly when you recall that most people quit their jobs because of a poor relationship with their manager. (With all the unskilled managers in the workplace, that makes total sense, doesn't it?)
We use a simple model to frame the knowledge and skills needed by first-level leaders: Self, Performance, Team, and Impact.
As a leader, I need to understand myself and my approach to leadership, as well as communicate clearly (Self). I need to master how to attract, coach, and manage the performance of others (Performance). I need to learn how to build my team influence others effectively, and manage change (Team). And, I need to impact the organization through setting and achieving goals, thinking strategically, and appraising performance (Impact).
To explore this important topic further and see how organizations like yours are preparing their emerging leaders, join us for our next complimentary webinar Preparing New Leaders for Frontline Management on Wednesday, September 19, 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT.
