Developing People
in a VUCA Age
|
The acronym VUCA stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Chaotic, and Ambiguous. It was introduced by the US Army War College in 1987 to describe the world after the end of the Cold War. Business leaders have adopted the acronym to describe the challenges of strategizing, making decisions, and planning in this increasingly unpredictable time.
|
Running a business through the past two VUCA years has been challenging, to say the least. Just as the US has been emerging from the pandemic, adjusting to new realities that include hybrid workplaces and hybrid training experiences, the world is now witnessing Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine and the destabilization of Europe and existing international alliances. I know I'm not alone in being appalled at the destruction and devastation, holding my breath while wondering what the future holds. More than once in the past two years, I’ve found myself shaking my head, and saying to myself, “I did not see that one coming!”
And yet, companies and organizations continue to grow, providing services and products, solving supply chain problems, developing innovative solutions, and yes, even developing their employees. I’m reminded of a story about a child on Christmas morning who discovers a pile of manure in the barn. Digging with glee she announces, “There must be a pony in here somewhere!” As a born optimist, I look for the opportunities that come with every challenging situation. I acknowledge the VUCA acronym but suggest we change its meaning:
Visionary, Unbeaten, Courageous and Agile!
If there is an upside to times of uncertainty, it is the opportunity to develop the things that matter most, and make changes for the better. We have the opportunity here and now to build thriving virtual and hybrid workplaces. We can develop the skills of our employees and managers so they succeed in these chaotic times. We can develop excellence in the design and delivery of virtual training and hybrid development programs.
At NetSpeed Learning, we love to partner with our clients to develop the skills of virtual trainers and producers, to design engaging virtual programs, and to help virtual leaders manage their remote teams.
Speaking of new opportunities, this year we have launched 30-minute NetSpeed Nuggets virtual sessions. Offered every other month, these rapid learning sessions will introduce one or two strategies or tactics that can help your organization be successful in the virtual workplace. Join us at our next complimentary NetSpeed Nuggets session, Design Tips to Increase Virtual Training Impact, on Wednesday, April 6, at 1:00pm ET / 10:00am PT, as we explore how virtual designers and facilitators can deliver sessions that challenge participants to engage, problem solve, and apply new techniques. Registration is required.
