PARTNER CORNER
A Partnership in Education
One of our longest standing and deepest partnerships is with the schools of Redwood City. From school visits to the library and librarian visits to the schools, you might say that we are fully embedded. Our goal is to promote the joy of learning and reading all year round throughout Redwood City schools. Here are some of the highlights of our partnerships:
  • Our outreach librarians visit schools to promote to families and teachers our library resources, the Summer Learning Challenge, and the KinderCard Campaign. Last year we read to 37,539 children in Redwood City.
  • Did you know that it has been shown that having a library card helps young kids develop an early love of reading and learning? The annual KinderCard program works to ensure every kindergartner in a Redwood City school (public or private) gets a library card, is introduced to a children's librarian by name, and is specially invited to our KinderCard Super Saturday event.
  • For our Author Presentation Program, we introduced Irene Vasco, a Colombian author, to Adelante School, Hoover School, and Selby Lane School. Vasco read from her book Letras Al Carbon to 1,170 children and parents.
  • This year we worked closely with local author Gary Soto. As he explained in his Scholastic Booklist biography, "Even though I write a lot about life in the barrio, I am really writing about the feelings and experiences of most American kids." As a result, Soto is considered to be one of the most important contemporary authors in the United States. RCPL and Gary Soto visited three school assemblies at Clifford School, Garfield Community School, and Roy Cloud School.
We conclude this partnership corner with a quote from one of our RSCD teachers: "One of the HIGHLIGHTS of our month is when Armando comes to visit us in Kindergarten. As a result of his monthly visits, many of my students go to the library to find him and all of the wonderful books he shares. The library was one of my favorite places growing up and I love that it is becoming a favorite to so many of my students. Thank you Redwood City Library for all you do to create more readers in the world!" Pam Barasch, K Teacher, Henry Ford School.
