Watershed Wise Rebate

E ducation plays a large part in fulfilling the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) mission to protect and enhance our creeks and rivers through service, leadership and expertise. SARA provides information and examples to show how personal actions have an effect on our creeks and rivers.

Currently, SARA is funding the Watershed Wise Rebate project. The project provides funds to build stormwater treatment using a variety of Low Impact Development (LID) methods. The goal is to create awareness of the negative impacts stormwater runoff has on our creeks and rivers, as well as reducing stormwater runoff.

LID is a design approach modeled after nature to manage stormwater runoff in a manner that mimics hydrologic processes, providing benefits for water quality and mitigating negative impacts of stormwater runoff. LID includes the use of structural best management practices (BMPs) such as rain gardens, bioswales, cisterns and green roofs.

One focus of LID is to improve water quality by filtering nonpoint source pollutants washed off impervious surfaces before they flow through storm drains and into to our creeks and rivers. Nonpoint source pollutants come from the air, vehicles, roads/parking lots and lawns. The rebate provides an opportunity for landscape architects and engineers to learn the design process for LID including site assessment, BMP sizing, materials, plants and different methods.  Each project may qualify for up to $100,000.

All rebate details and application materials are available on the SARA web site. For questions regarding the program, please contact  Jake Aalfs , SARA, at (210) 302-3248.
DSD took advantage of the LID Rebate and qualified for more than $34,000

SABCA Success
SABCA

On Oct. 6 and 7, 2016, the San Antonio Building Codes Academy (SABCA) presented two training sessions on the book titled Inspector Skills. Written with a focus on facilitation skills for inspectors and code staff, the book applies to anyone working in a customer service environment.

The sessions were presented by Steve Van Note, the book's author and Managing Director of Product Development for the International Code Council (ICC). He is responsible for developing technical resource materials in support of the International Codes. His role also includes the management, review, and technical editing of publications developed by expert authors.

In line with facilitation, Steve and his wife Marcie provided tips on professionalism, conflict resolution, communication skills, and how to have productive discussions.

DSD Director, Roderick J. Sanchez enjoyed
Mr. Van Note's training and agreed that his "topics on facilitation and communication are what our department emphasizes when providing great customer service."

DSD hosted the Fall SABCA training session to more than 234 customers, including staff from DSD, Transportation and Capital Improvement (TCI) inspectors, and from other city departments and municipalities.
