The Development Services Department is honored to have received two prestigious awards from the American Planning Association (APA), Los Angeles which recognizes and celebrates the most outstanding planning work in the region and statewide.
The Department received awards for the Housing Element Update and for an individual City planner. These awards reflect our commitment to creating more livable, vibrant and equitable communities through effective planning efforts. Learn more about the awards below!
Comprehensive Plan (Large Jurisdiction) Award of Excellence, Adopted 2021-2029 Housing Element (6th Cycle): The 6th Cycle Housing Element Update provides the City with a roadmap for accommodating projected housing demand, increasing housing production, improving housing affordability, preserving existing affordable housing, improving housing conditions and tenant protections, and facilitating development of housing for all income levels. The Plan was certified by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) in April 2022, making the City of Long Beach the first large jurisdiction in the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) region to receive certification.
Outstanding Young Planner Award of Excellence, Maryanne Cronin: APA Los Angeles has named Maryanne Cronin the Outstanding Young Planner of the Year for her exemplary leadership and valuable contributions to the advancement of the planning profession. Maryanne has been a Planner in our Planning Bureau for more than five years where she focuses on the City’s most complex entitlement, coastal and historic planning projects and programs. During this time, she has secured approvals for large development projects and has facilitated or supported hundreds of California Environmental Quality Act documents for both City and private development projects.
