Developments

Friends,

Spring is here. While it might be difficult at this time to feel the optimism and hope that spring offers in most years, it remains vital to look for the seeds of that potential. We recently gathered around our seder tables, putting aside the chaos outside our front doors, to engage in the rituals that remind us of oppressive times in the past and the continuous work to reach our liberation. On Passover, we move from degradation to praise. This year my hope is that we can find that “spark of life” amidst the chaos, and experience powerfully the new growth and hope of spring.

 New Partners Making a Difference

Last month we reported on new partners joining Yachad's efforts. These organizations are already making a difference.

Leigh Andreasen, a real estate broker and member of GCAAR, Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors, offered to provide a broker's appraisal for one of Yachad's homeowners, where we recently provided comprehensive health and safety remediation measures--new roof, plumbing, flooring, and more. The homeowner purchased her home a few years ago using the DC Homeowner Purchase Assistance Program. (HPAP). The appraisal showed an increase in new home equity. Leigh suggested some additional work that could further improve the home and the overall value. Yachad approached our new general contractor partner, CBG Building Company, which agreed to the work, at no cost to us. The homeowner is thrilled. Work will begin soon.

The Coalition, a consortium of housing and economic development nonprofits, and its Senior Homeowner Stabilization Program granted Yachad funds to replace a new client's roof, enabling Yachad to use its money to provide new appliances, flooring and other remediation measures to this homeowner.

We are thrilled to tap into the generosity of new partners so quickly. The need remains greater than ever to address critical housing issues without delay. Thank you to GCAAR, CBG Building Company and the Coalition. Thank you in advance to Clark Construction, who will be working with us later in the year.

In the news...

Yachad's asthma remediation effort was first spearheaded by Dr. Janet Phoenix in early 2018 with the creation of our virtual home visit program with Children's National Hospital. That program continues today, providing critical home remediation to DC families. Dr. Phoenix, a public health specialist and longtime advocate for childhood asthma solutions, was recently quoted in an article by The Washington Informer, entitled, Indoor Air Quality Linked to Higher Rates of Asthma and Respiratory Infections. Her voice and leadership is central to the advocacy efforts to improve environmental health inequities impacting families and children.

Dr. Phoenix states in the article, "There are various reasons why young people develop immune challenges. When a young child is exposed to a lot of pests or mold, then they can develop an allergy to that, which can change the way their immune system develops, and that change is permanent. It’s something that they carry around with them for the rest of their lives.”

While residents may have access to emergency care, long-term healthcare management for asthma and respiratory illnesses often requires ongoing monitoring and medication. Without the financial means to consistently access medical care or invest in home improvements, many D.C. residents struggle to effectively manage respiratory-based illnesses, leading to more frequent emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

“Children with asthma are at increased risk of unscheduled physician visits, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations when exposed to…allergens in the home,” a report from the National Institutes of Health on Housing and Asthma Disparities details.
