Prayer for Election Day

by Rev. Beverly Markham
As this day dawns, we give you thanks, O Lord…
for the beauty of the rising sun,
for the leaves that are golden and red, brown and green,
for the air that is crisp and for all the ways that the changing of the
seasons reminds us of your loving and attentive care for all of your
beloved creation.

As we rise this morning with the future on our minds, we remember you, O Lord, and we are filled with hope…
we remember your promise that you will always be with us,
we remember that you have plans and a future for us that are hopeful,
we remember that we work and pray for justice here and now as we fix our
eyes on your eternal kingdom.

As we watch the news of elections today, O Lord, we keep our focus on you and pray…
       for peace in our country,
       for fair elections,
for a spirit of cooperation among supporters of both presidential
candidates and all candidates on the ballot today,
for our country and our democratic government to continue to be a place
of hope for all people,
for a renewed call to the hard and beneficial work of cooperation across
the aisles in order to achieve a balanced and thoughtful government bent
on serving all.

At the end of today, we will continue our prayers to you…
In your great mercy, you have given us new birth into a living hope. In our lives of hope, guide us to seek first your kingdom and your righteousness especially when we feel compelled to seek earthly power instead. Guide us to live out the political vision of our Lord Jesus Christ who taught us that in the kingdom of God, the poor in spirit, the meek, the mourners, the peacemakers, the merciful are blessed.

Praise be to you, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
