Light in the Darkness
Rabbis, ministers, and worshippers came together for an interfaith Hanukkah candle lighting event on Dec. 17. "A candle is a reminder that no matter how much lack of light there may be, it's so important we affirm the light that is within us and among us," said John Gregory-Davis, pastor of the Meriden Congregational Church. The event at White River's LISTEN Community Center was sponsored by Dayenu, a Jewish climate group.
Produced by Simeon Morrow for JAM.

"The Shared World"
Vievee Francis, Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth, read from her latest book of poetry, The Shared World, at Hanover's Howe Library last June. 'This book is about what we share, what we keep to ourselves, what we don't even share with ourselves," she said. "I was born in 1963, born into Jim Crow....and I remember everything. I have forgotten nothing." Many thanks to Howe librarian Jared Jenisch.

What role did the CIA play in the 1960 ousting of Patrice Lumumba, the prime minister of the Republic of the Congo? Stuart Reid, executive editor of Foreign Affairs, revealed the sordid details in his lecture at Dartmouth's Dickey Center earlier this month. "Eisenhower said [in an August National Security Council meeting] something to the effect that Lumumba had to be physically eliminated," said Reid, author of The Lumumba Plot: The Secret History of the CIA and a Cold War Assassination.
