Announcing the 2026 Storytellers Challenge finalists

SSHRC received a record number of submissions for the 2026 Storytellers Challenge and is pleased to introduce this year's 20 finalists. Each receives $3,000 for their exceptional skills showcasing how SSHRC-funded research is improving the lives of Canadians. Finalists advance to Phase 2 of the Challenge—the Storytellers Showcase, taking place in Montréal at the Science Writers and Communicators of Canada conference on June 16, 2026.

Canada and Mexico establish a new research partnership

SSHRC, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Secretaría de Ciencia, Humanidades, Tecnología e Innovación have entered into a formal partnership. Through this memorandum of understanding, a framework between the three partners has been established for cooperation in science, the social sciences and humanities, technology, and innovation that is inclusive, equitable, transparent, sustainable, and grounded in the importance of Indigenous knowledge systems.

Updates to Bias in Peer Review training

The federal research funding agencies have released a revamped set of training modules on Bias in Peer Review. The updated modules reflect a shared tri-agency commitment to promote responsible research assessment, research excellence and an inclusive research ecosystem.

Funding tip of the month: New research travel supplements available for Canada Research Training Awards Suite

The new Canada Research Training Awards Suite—Research Travel Supplements are replacing the Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements. The new supplements, valued at $9,000 each, aim to help award holders offset the costs of travelling within or outside of Canada for research purposes for a defined period. By supporting the next generation of researchers, the initiative strengthens international collaboration, enriches research training, and enhances Canada’s global research presence. Those eligible should apply by June 10, 2026.
