Pandemic has reshaped transnational family relationships—and how researchers study them

Carleton University social work researcher Ilyan Ferrer grew up in a multigenerational, FilipinoCanadian household, with his grandparents helping raise him. Ferrer intended to use his SSHRC Insight Development Grant to study similar intergenerational, transnational caregiving relationships. His team was set to explore how elders contribute to their families and culture, by interviewing participants across Canada and the Philippines. The pandemic not only changed how they research such families, but, also, how those very relationships work.
