Leadership transition at SSHRC

The term of SSHRC’s longstanding president, Ted Hewitt, ended late February. We are grateful for Hewitt’s vision, dedication and service during his 11 years at SSHRC’s helm. As the Government of Canada pursues its search for the next president, Normand Labrie, our governing council chair, assumes the powers of the president, in accordance with the SSHRC Act. Sylvie Lamoureux, vice-president, Research, serves as chief operating officer, leading daily operations. Under this new interim leadership, SSHRC remains focused on advancing research excellence across Canada.

SSHRC, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research all support and promote high quality research and research-related activities in a wide variety of disciplines and areas. However, it can sometimes be difficult to know which agency you should apply to for funding. To learn whether your project can receive SSHRC funding, see our subject matter eligibility guidelines. Helping students in francophone communities distinguish facts from opinions and beliefs

As debates become more polarizing in our society, it can be hard to know how to address complex or controversial topics in the classroom. It’s one of the main topics Stéphanie Tremblay, religious studies professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal, is exploring in her research. With funding from a SSHRC Insight Grant, she is currently leading an interdisciplinary research project looking at how schools in Quebec, Belgium, France and Switzerland are handling conversations around conflicting truths.
