Pilot supplements initiative will offer additional support to Indigenous master’s students | SSHRC and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) have launched a pilot supplement opportunity to support First Nations, Inuit and Métis master’s students. The Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative is open to Indigenous students doing master’s level research in natural sciences, engineering, social sciences or humanities. Students can apply through this year’s Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s competition. The Indigenous Scholars Supplements provide increased and more flexible support to Indigenous students, and can be used for travel to northern and remote communities, honoraria for Elders, child- and elder-care, and more. | |

The Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS) has launched a new, consolidated @TIPS_SPIIE account on Twitter (@SPIIE_TIPS for French) and a new, bilingual @TIPS-SPIIE account on LinkedIn. If you followed @CRC_CRC on Twitter, you will automatically be redirected to the new, multiprogram Twitter account. Do update the LinkedIn connection, though.
The old @CERC_CERC and @CFREF_APOGEE LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, as well as the Canada Research Chairs YouTube channel, will be phased out. The Canada Excellence Research Chairs YouTube channel will be renamed and automatically become your new TIPS YouTube channel.
The new accounts will provide updates and announcement information on all six institutional programs TIPS administers for the three federal research funding agencies. For New Frontiers in Research Fund information, keep following @SSHRC_CRSH.

Top minds in economics connect in Germany | Thirteen SSHRC-funded economics doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows attended the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences in Lindau, Germany, August 23 to 27. The triennial meetings gather scholars and researchers from more than 60 countries for discussions between Nobel laureates and top-ranked emerging economics scholars. | | |

Fit to (sustainably) print | ACFAS recently interviewed Martin Beauregard and Ahmed Koubaa, of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, about using industrial forest residues in 3D printing, to support sustainable development. The team’s research was funded by the New Frontiers in Research Fund’s Exploration stream. (Content in French only.) | | |

Is your application among these first to need a data management plan? | SSHRC, NSERC and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research have developed the list of initial funding opportunities subject to the Data Management Plan requirement of the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy. Applicants to these will be among the first needing to submit a data management plan with their applications. The policy promotes sound digital data management and stewardship practices, including ones aligned with Indigenous data sovereignty. The agencies are implementing it incrementally as development of research data practices and capacity continue. | |

Research tip of the month: Knowledge Synthesis Grants for Shifting Dynamics of Privilege and Marginalization | SSHRC, with Genome Canada, has launched a call for Knowledge Synthesis Grants to understand the state of knowledge about shifting dynamics of privilege and marginalization. Apply by December 15, 2022, for one of up to 30 grants of up to $30,000 each. Recipients will share their findings with stakeholders from across sectors at the Imagining Canada’s Future Forum in late 2023 or early 2024. | | | |

Traditional Indigenous oral literatures may hold modern climate and social solutions
“Indigenous cultures are rich with oral literature containing knowledge that can help address issues such as climate change, social justice and community well-being,” says Jeannette Armstrong, Canada Research Chair in Okanagan Indigenous Knowledge and Philosophy at The University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus. She is documenting, cataloguing and analyzing meanings in Syilx oral histories and knowledge systems, then sharing findings with the Indigenous communities who are the keepers of that knowledge. In doing so, Armstrong is helping others understand and maintain language and identities, and shape action on today’s pressing issues.

Building knowledge, resources and hope for non-urban LGBTQ2+ youth
Independent researcher Alex Abramovich, of the Canadian Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, is not only gathering data and understanding about the needs and experiences of previously under-researched groups, his work has directly led to life-saving services for LGBTQ2+ youth experiencing homelessness. Through engagement, a mobile lab, and a SSHRC Insight Grant, Abramovich is exploring the best ways to help young LGBTQ2+ people who live outside major urban centres and no longer feel safe with social supports.
