Canada attracts global research talent

Canada has recruited world-leading research talent through the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada (previously Canada Impact+ Research Chairs) and Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders programs, administered by SSHRC. The recently announced results of Intake 1 include an investment of $504 million to support 64 chairs from across a range of disciplines who will advance transformational research in strategic priority areas for Canada. Over $37 million in funding will also support institutions in recruiting 63 early career researchers over the next year.

Major investment in social sciences and humanities research at institutions across Canada

On July 21, recipients from the 2025 Insight Grants, Partnership Grants and Partnership Development Grants, and the 2026 Insight Development Grants were announced in Edmonton. By investing in these innovative researchers across the country, SSHRC continues to support outstanding research projects and partnerships that advance knowledge, address complex societal challenges, and strengthen Canada’s research ecosystem. Congratulations to all of the recipients, whose projects will help generate new insights and create meaningful impacts across communities, sectors and disciplines.

Research to address challenges related to artificial intelligence

SSHRC’s newest Insight on Canadian Priorities feature highlights research on the societal, commercial, legal, educational and health aspects of AI. These insights can help policy-makers, business leaders and other decision-makers develop innovative, evidence-based approaches to addressing the major challenges that AI presents.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems to be represented in classification system

Indigenous Knowledge Systems will soon be added to the Canadian Research and Development Classification (CRDC), a common framework used to measure and report on research activities in Canada, and maintained through a partnership between Statistics Canada and the federal research funding agencies. This important revision draws on guidance provided by the SSHRC Advisory Circle on Indigenous Research and Statistics Canada's Centre for Indigenous Statistics team.

Funding tip of the month: New funding opportunity supports research that explores the changing nature of security and conflict

SSHRC and NordForsk have launched a Knowledge Synthesis Grants competition to synthesize existing research on the changing nature of security and conflict and identify gaps that future research projects can explore. The competition includes two funding streams: Stream 1 is for projects led by researchers at eligible Canadian institutions; Stream 2 will support collaborations between Canadian and Nordic researchers.
