Adventure in Diamonds

It goes without saying, we can all appreciate the beauty of a diamond. There are many variables which affect how a diamond appeals to us, mainly the 4 C's, cut, color, clarity and carat weight. As your jeweler, we are always happy to locate just what you're looking for in a diamond. But if you want an adventure and don't mind getting a little dirty, there is a place that you can go "digging for diamonds."

Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas offers visitors a chance to hunt for real diamonds over a 37-plus acre diamond bearing volcanic crater. The best part is, you get to keep what you find. With mining tools available to rent, you may even find amethyst, garnet, jasper, agate, quartz and more.

There are plenty of famous diamonds that have been unearthed at the park, but perhaps the most notable of all is the Strawn-Wagner Diamond. The diamond was purchased by the State of Arkansas and placed on permanent display at the park. The diamond was graded by the American Gem Society (AGS) as a perfect "Triple Zero," being perfect in cut, color and considered flawless. This is the highest grade a diamond can achieve. The diamond weighed 3.03 carats before it was cut to a 1.09 carat round brilliant shape and is estimated to occur an astounding, one time in a billion!

April Birthstone: Diamond

Diamonds are considered the most desired of all gemstones. They are thought to represent love, purity, strength and power. Those born during the month of April are fortunate to have this beautiful gem as their birthstone.

Diamonds have always been surrounded with legend and lore. They have been thought to improve personal clarity and vision, with the higher the clarity the more it helps to strengthen those qualities.

The Greeks and Romans believed that diamonds were splinters from falling stars.

Diamonds rate 10 on the Mohs Hardness scale which makes them a great choice for everyday wear. They can be cleaned with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush. It is also safe to use ultrasonic and steam cleaners

Legendary Gemstones: The Uncle Sam Diamond

Another amazing diamond found at Crater of Diamonds State Park is the
40.23-carat Uncle Sam Diamond. It is the largest diamond ever unearthed in the U.S. Legend has it that the diamond was named after its finder, W.O. Bassum, who went by the nickname Uncle Sam. Over the years, the diamond has been cut twice. The second cutting resulted in the 12.42-carat, emerald-cut gem shown here. It's almost hard to image that the rough stone was more than three times the size of the resulting stunning diamond.
