Diane Ravitch’s August 28 blog presents a frightening account of the consequences of the vast scope of privatization of public services

John Thompson’s review of Lawrence Baines’ book- Privatization of American’s Public Institutions—should be a wakeup call to all citizens. The military, corrections, higher education and public schools are the main targets of privatization.

Although the assault on public K12 education continues to be brazen and burly, traditional public schools will survive primarily because boards of education, typically comprised of thoughtful citizens supported by their respective communities, stand in the way of privatization. Other public institutions don’t have that advantage.

It is therefore incumbent on boards of education to fight privatization of schools with all the legal means available. Charters, vouchers, education savings accounts, state takeovers and portfolio districts are counter to the public common school and should be resisted.
