CCH Pounder’s contemporary art collection is showcased in what many might think an incongruous space, The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center.  The works in Diaspora Stories: Selections From the CCH Pounder Collection are culled from the award winning actress’ New Orleans home and are not works from long deceased Black masters.  This is a who’s who of today’s contemporary artists from Kehinde Wiley to Robert Pruitt; and from Ronald Jackson to Mickalene Thomas to Rockford native Harmonia Rosales.  It confirms that Pounder, over her more than four decades of collecting, has both an eye, and some impressively high ceilings. An immense oil painting of Winnie Mandela by South African artist Loyiso Mkize greets you as you enter Diaspora Stories, no doubt a nod to Pounder playing the icon in 2004’s Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story.

ATLANTA BASED ARTISTS JAMAAL BARBER SCORES THE WIN ON THE THIRD WEEK OF THE EXHIBIT

Dometi Pongo riffs on art, culture and style
Artist Jamaal Barber
By Vee L. Harrison

The show is getting heated, and hosts Dometi Pongo and Mellissa Chiu’s outfits were even hotter, in the latest MTV and The Smithsonian Channel series, #TheExhibit.

Episode three challenged the competing artists to create a piece of artwork that inspired how they survived or thrived during the pandemic. This week’s winner, Jamaal Barber, Atlanta-based printmaker and painter, gave us a printed piece that social media (especially Black Twitter) agrees made episode three “Jamaal’s episode”. During his big win, he shared tears of joy, embracing Pongo with an emotional hug, causing viewers to emotionally connect with his art, and the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lyric Opera of Chicago presents the second of two Chicago-set world premieres in its season: Proximity, a trio of new American operas that confront head-on some of the greatest challenges affecting modern society: the devastating impact of gun violence on cities and neighborhoods, yearning for connection in a world driven by technology, and the need to respect and protect our natural resources. In an innovative production by director Yuval Sharon that is searing in its intimacy, revolutionary in its structure, and groundbreaking in its technical wizardry, Proximity is on stage at the Lyric Opera House for five performances only, March 24 – April 8, 2023.
