We recently learned of a new Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) made from post-consumer recycled glass that can be used as a substitute for cement and an alternative to current SCM’s in concrete design mixes.
Ground Glass Pozzolans (GGP) are manufactured by grinding the cleaned glass into an ultra-fine powder that can be used to replace up to 50% of the cement in concrete design mixes and has been found to increase concrete strength, durability, and chemical resistance.
Typical applications include cast-in-place concrete, pre-stressed and precast concrete, concrete blocks, mortars, and grouts. The environmental benefits to replacing cement with recycled glass are significant because the production of cement accounts for 7% of all carbon emissions worldwide so reducing the amount of cement in concrete mix designs can play a big role in reducing carbon emissions while reducing the amount of glass ending up in landfills.
GGP is being used right now in concrete products in CT and NY and we will specify its use as a SCM on our projects moving forward.
